Direct drive axle?

I seen this pic of a direct drive nitro car and used it for an avatar. Looks like a belt or rubber band between the nitro motor and the axle. Are there really cars out there like that? Wouldn't you need some sort of clutch? You would need a break too I would imagine.
 
There is most likely a clutch there but your pic is too small to tell for sure, post a larger pic of it.
 
I've seen direct drive dragsters. They crank up and wheels immediately start spinning. They are in some sort of servo controlled stand that holds the wheels off the ground until they are ready to go then it drops them down and they take off.

I don't know what that is, but it's VERY old judging by the cooling head. It's probably a tether car, just made to run in circles.
