OHFKING DIFFS!!

:vampire: :flamer: :bowned: :violin: :horsecrap

i put in the 3-piece clutch from integy and the FOC yesterday. i was out for a good day of bashing today, and to my surprise after about 2 tanks, i start hearing some clicking in the front with some periodic lockups. beautiful. i proceeded to beat the piss out of it and tear the diff up for everything they were worth. luckily i have a spare... but still. of all the parts to fix, i loathe the diffs the most. ah well... gotta keep me busy i guess.

:hammer:

anyway. i go to take off the rear diff too. figured i might as well change all the oil while i was at it. somehow the hex wore out in the bumper mount, so i had to grind the screw down...

well when i got it all off the rear diff was perfect. any clue as to why my front takes so much abuse? anyway, i figured id share my frustrating night with all of you. g'night

i love :hammer:
........my REVO

I broke my Revo down about two weeks ago for a good cleaning and also to check the difs. Both front and rear were pretty dry but the gears were in good shape. I re-filled em and so far so good. No leaks noted either. I have a feeling they don't fill em very full out of the factory.

yeah, that way you are actually getting the full effect of the dif oil your putting in. If you fill the dif half way with 50K, are you really covering the whole gear assembly inside the dif. There was some speculation on this on other forums and the consensus was to fill em, I believe that is how must buggy manuals instruct to fill difs as well.

The Revo manual doesn't say, nor does it say anywhere from Traxxas. The deal about the buggies was mentioned by a couple of people. Since I just got that buggy from FastEddy I haven't read the instructions yet so I was going on the assumption the people that said it knew what they were talking about. Now I can say on my Revo I filled up almost to the top and they have been fine, no leaks, no problems on the track.

traxxas doesn't mention it cause they slop grease in em like every other RTR buggy....I do it on my maxx too but I have 1/8 diffs on that too....

good point plaid. can i swap to better diffs in the revo? these ones are junk. i busted the front end twice already, and the slipper isnt ~that~ tight. i dont like it too loose, cause the shoes burn up then. i can't win...

I don't think there are better diffs for that thing yet cause nobody has really needed them...if your tearing them up that fast you might be installing them too loose.....ask your LHS for an OFNA diff Shim kit, about 4 bucks...get 2......when you rebuild your diffs look for play in the spider gears....do they have a hollow part in th eback of the spider gears for a small O-ring?...use the shims to limit as much play as possible but still allowing the diff to spin freely.....your killing the gears because they aren't being held in place under heavy loads.....I've held out on getting a Revo for this exact reason....I know every RC I have I always upgrade the diffs (except the XB8 and the MBX-5...they were already heavy duty).....getting an aluminum diff housing/cup would help alot if anyone makes em, but it adds weight.......I haven't worked on many Revos but the diffs seem to be the biggest issue for most Revo Bashers I know....

no, theres no o-rings... why would the spider gears matter anyway? the ring gear is what keeps on losing its teeth. if i put a spool (or wadded up paper towel...) in the front, would it "strengthen" my situation any? or would that put even more stress on the ring gear?

I am not opening my diffs to see anything. I am just gonna beat the piss out of it until I can't anymore :hammer:

There should be two little blue o-rings on the shaft ends. If you clean the gears up real good you will see them. They are in the rebuild kit too.

Kinda like your R40 ... drive it till it breaks then deal with it.

My car is in pieces after every race day  Now my revo on the other hand....

those o-rings are to help seal the thing, not shim the spider gears. i know they are there, its just not what plaid was referring to. i locked the front. I'm going to see how it handles this way, and go from there. ill keep you posted.

I've never had issues w/ ring gears on any RC...sounds like the ring / pinion mesh is off....not sure which way you need to shim but try the OFNA kit...it has the large shims so you can off set the Ring gear too, not just push the pinion into it (ring gear) more....most guys I see trying to get the pinion to grip when they really needed to push the ring gear to one side or another.......w/o feeling the play I couldn''t tell you which way to go.....sorrry....
