Well i ordered the FR18 for the MAXX and i got it bout a week ago and i went to the LHS today to get some partsd and glanced at the display case with engines in it and noticed there was a FR18 that was different from mine. That was labled on the blobk as FR18 .03 that one looked the slighest bit beefier and had a red head on it and the one i have has a silver/chrome head on it. Did i get the old as i hear crappy one that sucks or is the one i have just different cause its the MAXX model??

The 2003 uses some different internal materials and is a better engine than the original run.

Does that mean your version sucks? I don't think so, but they did a major overhaul of that series of engines for a reason.

how do would you say it compares to the .03 I'm thinking of selling this one and getting the '03 it hasnt even been run yet because I've heard that this one doesn't put out as much power as it should?

I can't speak from personal experience with that engine, but what I have heard matches what you heard. The newer models are better.

That being said, the older model was noted as nothing to sneeze at. I'd say it is a good mill, but the newer model is probably the better mill.

Again, this is hearsay...so I'd suggest looking around for better information before dumping what could be a great mill. I can tell you that I have not seen many people on this site talk about running that particular engine...so this might not be the best place to search for answers on that one.

BTW, please do not start another separate thread discussing that which you are discussing in this thread. Falls into the category of duplicate posting.

DO the new ones have red or silver cooling heads? Some1 recently posted a pic of their new fantom on the traxxas boards and it was silver.

the new ones have a read head. What I'm thinking of doing is running this FR18 for about 2-3 gallons then do a conversion to the maxx and get a hyper 8 port on it and sell off the FR18

because the stock chassis was not designed for the power of a .21+ eninge that why the conversion chassis comes with a beefier chassis with about and extra 1 1/2" length on it and beefier engine mount

Its a good way to save a lot of money if it matters to you...I'm poor:jet:

its a exspensive hobby in the first place and putting a .21+ on the stock cassis would just not be a very practical thing to do.

Mines the red head, didnt even know a chrome head FR18 existed so I can't comment? Glad to hear I got the better of the 2 though.
