I know there are a few car guys out here and I have a haunting question. A friend of mine bought a 95 Jaguar XJ16 before re deploying to Iraq and asked me to watch afer it. I went out to move the car but the battery is dead, I mean dead, dead, no idiot lights, no nothing. I am assuming that the battery is in the trunk seeing how it ain't under the hood, here is the kicker. For whatever reason, the key won't open the trunk and I'm not sure how to pull the backseat without destroying it. Any ideas, I would be grateful for any help.

ya know, I think in them year jags, that theres a metal webbing across the back of the seat anyway, even if you did take the back seat off. I dunno if a person could fit threw it. I used to detail at a Ford dealership right after high school and seen alot of Jags. I could be wrong, but if I'm thinking of the right year, its all "x'ed" out. Might wanna call a locksmith on this one and see if they can pop it open for ya.

Fielding a guess on this one; you sure you're using the correct key?

All kidding aside, the trunk lockout could be enabled. However, the key would still let you in. Unless, as crazy as this sounds, the lock is electric (I've seen wierder). About the only thing I can suggest is getting one of those quick-start things you plug into the cig lighter; Don't try to start it using that, but try to get the trunk open.

Hope that helps ya a little!

I think you are right about the electric lock, tryed the cig lighter charger (no go). I'm about out of ideas, there has to be something.

Yeah it could be you have a valet key. It will only start the car it will not unlock the doors or trunk. I know some GM vechicles used to come with a valet key.

Is there a button on the center console?

Also is it a XJ6 or an XJ16?

My bad, XJ6. The trunk button is on the dash just to the left of the steering wheel.

Not unless you have a suggestion, I would think there would have to be a way. I'm sure I am not the only one to have this problem. A tow truck driver was stumped by this, he called other drivers and they were stumped too.

The only thing I can think of is an invention that you plug right into the cigarette lighter and it charges your battery. Can't think of what it is called but it claims to charge your battery without getting out of the car.

What about those portable jump start devices that plug into the cigarette lighter? Might be worth a shot. I think Kragen or Pep boys has them.

edit: I type slow.

Have you checked the fuse?

No, haven't done that. I hope it isn't one that is in the fuse box in the trunk. There is something like 5 of them scattered through the car. I have another key to try but it looks the same

As stated you most likely have the valet key. The battery could also be under the backseat as it in BMW's, MB's and some cadillacs to name a few. Also if the battery is in a remote location other than under th hood, you should still have two studs to jump off of under the hood. Also most of the higher end cars have a draw on the battery constantly and there will be a batter disconnect somewhere, some are under the hood others unfortunately could be in the trunk.

I was hoping to find jump studs under the hood but if they are there they are hidden well, same with the switch. I'll try the other key in the morning and see what happens. Thanks for the help guys.

When you are at the car next time try using both keys to open the glovebox. If they are indeed valet keys you wont be able to open it. And I have not heard of a electronic glovebox lock (not saying it doesn't exist). That is my only suggestion to see if you indeed have valet keys.

Oh yeah and the battery is in the trunk. Unless the XJ6 I had seen had somthing custom done.

Ya know, that gives me an idea. If you can't get at the battery, perhaps attach a battery charger at the alternator? Can you reach the positive line on the alternator?

If you can, try connecting a charger there.

I'm no rocket scientist, but this should help put a charge back into the battery.

Well this is the pain in the a$$ way but crawl underneath the pig and connect the positve to the starter post that the battery runs to and the neg close by on the frame, she should get the jumpstart you need. it is a real pain in the a$$ but it might be your only option.

Not to sound like an smart a$$ but have you looked in the owners manual?
