As I was waiting for my Sirio Monster .27's to arrive to power my Kanai twins I began researching a custom pipe for these monsters. I mean most people out there buy a .25, .26 or higher engine and slap a .21 pipe on them because there is nothing really available to fit something larger than a 21. After a thorough search the only pipes I was able to find wer mostly fits .21/.27 engine pipes.

I was kind of backed into a corner I am not a scientist here but I know a ton about 2 stroke exhausts. The very thought that a .21 exhaust would work equally as well in a .27 pretty much is complete rubbish. While I am not saying that this will not work nor that it will not work well but you'll be literally wasting energy of the engine by using a mismatched pipe.

With this in my thoughts I discussed this subject thoroughly with several members, bash buddies and also Rick Ritter who makes custom pipes for T-Maxx's, Savages and racing quads. With variables like shockwaves, internal/external ports, reflection and a ton of other things going on each and every time an engine fires you really need something that is matched to your particular engine's signature.

Having raced outboard hydroplanes in my teenage years I learned a little about tuning exhausts while underway thus changing the shape of the whole internal size of the pipe to accomodate different rpms of the engine while running at different speeds. While this is still on the back burner as knowing how we did it back then and the fact that this is a new approach to rc pipes, well not new but not race legal for pipes to have moving parts.

Error gave me a pipe from a .46 helo. The thing was super long but the more we discussed the options the more and more feasable it was becoming to modifying it to fit one of my monsters. First we cut ½" off the pipe's stinger. Next we plugged the stock stinger, threaded and used it as a securement point on my K1.

Next I cut off about 1" off the coupler end of the pipe, removed the nipple in then pics then milled away the excess remaining inside the pipe so the exhaust would flow more freely.

Now both ends of the pipe were mostly finished but since the exhaust no longer had a stinger we had to make a new one. Error drilled out the side of the pipe, fitted and attached a new stinger.

Here's the mounted pipe on my K-1 after initial testing.

Our first impressions of our creation, hmmmm, how do words put this... Error's first words were, "You were using the 20% I gave you?" We'll both post more on this subject later.

Our first testing session will be posted in a video tonight....
****hint, hint, nudge, nudge, ERROR, BACK TO WORK!!!!****

Very nice work guys. There aint nothing better than trying to invent things. What did you use to keep the new stinger on, is that JB Weld.

I got a handle on the stick thing, and am pretty good with a MIG. But TIG, I just don't have the coordination to work a rod, torch, helmet and foot pedal at the same time. I took a welding class at the local CC and we got to try TIG one night. I was seeing spots for most of the next day.

What happens if a person was to put a stock.25 pipe on a .21 or like a .15 or something smaller? (A bigger pipe than needed) Is that bad? I'm just curious. :Noobie: here.. Thanks~Andy

p.s. That pipe looks good! Good work!

They really don't have one out that is specifically engineered for larger than 21. You look at the vast majority of the bigger bore engines and they are in a .21 casing that is milled out to a larger interior diameter thus making them a bigger engine.

The pipe we were using had a stock stinger interior diameter of 9mm. Your average .21 engine pipe has about a 7mm. The stinger we made for that pipe is 6.2mm. You will also remember that we modified the length of the pipe. Partly so we could fit it into the chassis but also so that we could be able to harness the energy that we had been hoping for.

The larger pipe itself may function however you might need to do a little modification to either the stinger, location of the pressure fitting and overally length.

We are really both believing that the smaller diameter stinger might have been our clincher for this project and we have already planned on trying another using a larger stinger or possibly dual stingers to allow further output.

This may or may not improve what we have already done in terms of function but it will be worth volumes of information for projects thereafter.

EP, I'm impressed, a lot of work to modify a pipe....I have one of the Sirio mills and hadn't given much thought other than finally putting an 069 on it. But non the less it's a 21 pipe. Same for the 26, it's a copy of the 086. You got me thinking again...nice work you two.

WOW! Thats deep, never really thaught about it.You are sparking alota interest here. These restictive pipes on the bigger engines could acount for alota peoples tuning issues.Keep the info rolling:write: And whats up with the yellow reflector on the wing?

you guys did a kick ass job, congrats! EP , did you go to debbies first pt. race yesturday?

No were in Roanoke today playing around. I just got back an hour ago. The stinger came off the pipe so next chapter is going to be a tig welder to hold the stinger in place.

Well, all I can say is that this setup is freakin scarry. On the dirt track you really couldn't get past idle and it'd be on the pipe. We had to dial in a ton of exponential on the throttle to get it tamed a bit. There'll be video if it soon. And fast, OMG. With the torque that mill has, I'd gear it up some more, like put a 15t on it.

Here's try two with JB weld:

After this sets up I will add a buttload more to the stinger to make sure the thing does not come off again.

That's preeeeety haha.
As ugly as that JB Weld is, I like it! It makes it look like the "secret" pipe that it is.

You should make and sell those bad boys on eBay.

Actually Error and I are talking about our gen 2 and 3 pipes right now. We are going to wait for the next few prototypes before we even think about what we could do after that.

Hey, that's my old Duratrash car stand in the last pic. Wow, it's famous now.

is that a reflector? lol. nice job, good inginutity{sp?}. makes me wanna make somethin..... u people and ur diet coke... yuck.. :horsecrap i thought we had a smile showing it puking...:puke: i found it...

later

Diet Coke, the mellowest stuff we had. Went for the strait up black coffee mostly, but nearly blew up the kitchen when the expresso maker got constipated.
