I just got back from running my savage x ss on a baseball field for a few hours. When I was putting the engine to bdc to let it cool after it shut off I noticed that on one side of the flywheel, all the way around, the teeth are all sheared off. I also noticed that my sharpie mark for finding bdc was off by a good quarter turn.

Now here's the catch:
The truck runs fine and everything spins smoothly EXCEPT at bdc, the engine feels really gritty and gets jammed when spinning it in the reverse direction. It feels normal when you spin it forward though.

Any thoughts?

If it's a roto start, when you spin it backwards it engages the one way bearing and will spin the roto gears, that's likely what you are feeling. You could always take the roto back plate off and try it again, if it still feels gritty I would pull the back plate and check for bearings that could be worn out.

Ahh ok, that would explain why its only gritty in one direction (it is a roto, I swapped out the pull start when I first got it). It was really dusty so maybe its just some dust in the roto gears. I saw the flywheel and thought it had something to do with that. I'll check the roto start gears to make sure that's it. Thanks man!
