RC Driving Style
I've been having probs. w/ my engine running. I thought it was carb. and almost ready to buy a new one(carb). Took motor back out of truck tonight and was cleaning up and remembered I had forgot to spray WD-40 in it. So I spray and let it set.

Picked up and noticed a glob of oil on table. YES I FOUND THE PROBLEM!!!!!!!!!!!

Where motor mt. attaches on the side away from exhaust (TMaxx), small bubbles were coming from the WD-40.

Also, while looking down in the intake hole of the case, I found scratched in places. These are from the factory, I have not modded in anyway. Also, while turning crank, there is friction. Something is grinding.

Anyway my point is, take your time and run every small possible idea through your head.

Now, it's time for me to just buy either a S7, WS7, or C5!!!!!!!
 
Grinding?

Can you submit photos of the "crack"?
I (and other Members) would like to see it.

The grinding noise could be anything from a failed bearing to scawing on the cylinder lining or piston.
I would actually strip the motor right down and give it a proper autopsy.
Some photos of the motor stripped down to components would be great too.

As for WD40 as "after run oil" that's something I don't quite agree with, even if Traxxas do endorse this method.

I use Blue Thunder Final Run, it's a special after run fuel mixture. The nice thing about this stuff is that you don't accumilate oil gunk in the exhaust like you do when using any conventional after run oil.

Do you have a "Macro" function on your camera?
That is usualy highlighted by a little flower on one of the rotary switches, using the Macro function allows for focused close-ups.

The crack from what I see is right on the engine mount.
Had any major impacts, rollovers or flips with that MAXX of yours?
 
I didn't think it was that bad of an impact, but it just landed in a vital area. I had just started, and getting needles set, and jumped a small ditch (body off) and it landed at the peak of the hill.

I thought in the crash I only broke the fuel tank, but I guess it must have landed on the head and caused the break.
