computer slowing down

I removed all my pics and vids from it, ran two cleaners on it too but its freezing up alot before actually working, it will freeze for like 30 seconds sometimes before it will open the internet or another program. Anything else I can do? Or is it just tired?

When was the last time you cleaned the dust out of the case and off the fans? And did you defrag he drives yet?

I got rid of the dust but whats defrag the drives?

Did it start suddenly or had you noticed it slowing down before?
Go to Programs, accessories, system tools. You can run it from there.

Ok I think I did it, lol. Little circle was still spinning but the ok button was ready to be clicked so maybe it was done? So far so good, no freezing.

I dont know lol. Vista, I know that. Its a 5 year old Emachines. Its working good now though again, guess that did it. I'm thinking some of the freezing is just firefox. I've never liked it but started having trouble with chrome a while back so I switched.

Ahhh, Why Vista? You`ve not considered Win 7 on it yet?

I have a new computer with 7 on it, I use it to download supercross lol. I'll have to just start using it sometime instead of trying to hold this one together.

Win 7 is quite a bit better than Vista IMO. I've had less problems with it glitching and BSODs than I did while running Vista.

Defrag
Run anti-virus
run anti-malware program
run anti-spyware program
clean temporary internet files, cookies, etc.

Try that stuff first. Many cases a gradual slow-down is a result of some malicious software, or buildup or garbage. Cholesterol is a good example. Good junk, bad junk.

Also, uninstall any programs that you don't use anymore. Games, etc.

Sometimes the best thing you can do for a pc is to wipe everything out and start over.
