Computer DSL Modem & Wireless Router Problem

Not all routers are coming out with the newest firmware, so it is probably a good thing to do firmware upddate even on a brand new router. If my wireless starts acting wacko, I usually unplug both the router and the modem for about 2 minutes and then plug in the modem and when it's connected to the internet then I plug the power back into the router. I had AT&T customer support walk me through it a while back.

I can't believe this. Turned on the desktop comp this morning and it can't get on line. I'm using the laptop through the wireless router connected to it. Same router and same problem Rob is having now.
I'm also fed up with this laptop. I bought it as a refurb on Ebay, and just bought a new battery for it. Wireless internet now, but still plugged into a power supply since it won't charge it.
I needed a laptop that I could take outside to program some of the helis, and It had to use XP for one of the programs. I only paid 265 for it, but this is the reason I always buy new.
I don't have an extension cord that will go down 6 floors on the elevator.

I just recently had to switch my DSL modem. Suddenly the last light would not turn on no matter what I tried. When I called my ISP we discovered that it had actually been up for more than two years, with not a single hiccup. A day later I had my new modem(exact same make and model), and was up and running in 15 minutes.

I've had my share of dodgy wifi routers though. I've been through three Linksys routers, and they've all been crap. They work for a year, and then need weekly/bi-weekly power cycling to function right.

My current Apple router has been up since 24-03-09. Damn that's almost two and a half years. Not one power cycle needed yet.

I'm actually have a problem with the modem itself now. I've had to power it down and back on in order for it to establish a connection the last 2 days.

AT&T can shove their crappy "free" router. If I can't get the new router/modem combo to work when I receive it on Friday, they can shove their DSL service as well.

I'm so glad I am not locked into a contract.

I've about had it with AT&T. House phone, cell phone and internet. I'm considering giving it all to my cable provider.

Anyway, the problem is over for me, at least right now. I bought a new laptop today and it only took me 20 minutes to get it onto my wireless network for all the updating.
I'm on my desktop right now. It seems this computer was trying to get on the wireless instead of through the Ethernet lines, so after some exploring I disconnected the network it thought it should be on.
Still no luck. I looked into device manager and found a network adapter that was disabled, clicked it to enable it and ... Voilla. I'm on with both.

It had disabled itself after everything worked, so it wasn't obvious. There was a list of almost 20 adapters in devise mgr and they were all showing error 10, unable to start. In that list was one that showed 'disabled'.

I appear to be back in business.

I installed a brand new DSL Modem & Wireless N combo and after about 30 minutes everything is working as it should be. I was smart enough to use the old network name and password so everything that accessed the network before can still access it without having to re-enter anything.

Much faster as well.

After researching, I am pretty sure it's the modem that is at fault. This is confirmed by the fact that it kept going off-line when the router wasn't even being used and I had to turn it off and on every day.

...and today neither computer can get anything printed.

That's why my server is dedicated to be a file/print server. I've had problems with the uPNP file server on my routers in the past.
