So with getting back into crawling, and using brushed motors, I found a great deal on a nice comm lathe last week, so I snagged it. My new Holmes motor started to cog at low RPM yesterday so I knew it was time to tackle my first motor tear down and comm cut.

It's a hard racing lathe, and they were pretty pricey back in the day, I got a smoking deal on it, in the original box.

It used a Tamiya connector, which I hate, so first things first, I had to change it out. The problem was, the plug was part of the battery housing, keeping the wires from moving and making it a nice, neat self contained pack. So I cut the old plug in half, drilled it out, and epoxied a deans plug in there.

This is my comm before

And this is after I was done

I also cleaned my brushes while I was at it

I had also marked my can as John at HH had put around 6deg of timing into my motor, and I wanted to make sure I got it back right where it was at

All done, and I'm happy to report that my motor runs like a top now!

Picked this up for a friend here on RCNT that needed it, and give it a good servicing and comm cut before it heads to it's new home on Monday.

Very nice! I have been running a brushed motor in the merv and I'm hoping to get a scaler soon so I need one of these!

So does this mean we can send you our motors and get them polished up for a low baller price?!!

Thanks for the kind words guys. I generally only do it for friends, and don't charge anything because I really enjoy doing it. Plus I get to break out the cool lathe. :D

But, if you need a motor done (it has to be a rebuild-able motor), then yes, shoot me a PM and pay shipping both ways and I'll do my best to bring it back to life. Also bear in mind, commutators and brushes have a service life just like everything else, sometimes there's no saving them.

Your da man HPIguy! I only have two Holmes Hobbies motors which I believe are rebuildable but they don't get much use.
