Ok I ran down to HobbyTown and found a Hot Bodies HPI 21 rotostart which lines up perfectly and the screw holes are bigger. I was able to use a larger screw as needed and now the backplate doesn't even budge which is perfect...

The down side, the damn thing cranks for about 3-4 seconds then free spins again - this engine is killing me as I'm now back to square one.

Maybe you should just use the pull starter? That is what I use on my 6-gallon P26 and I will use it on my P28.

Both one ways feel just fine that's what doesn't make sense, so I took the engine part AGAIN lastnight and when I pulled the back plate off I noticed that the axel was not flush up against the engine, instead it was about 1/8th of an inch or so away and into the backplate.

After pulling everything apart I put everything back together in my hand and put the axel the same way it was when I pulled out the backplate when doing so I noticed the axel was just verly in the one way bearing. So that got me thinking if the one way is wet at all there's not much axel there to grip the oneway and start the engine so I cleaned everything and then reassembled the engine this time I placed the same size nut inside the backplate then put the axel back in, now the axel can't back out of the engine and the axel is completely within the one way bearing.

We'll find out tonight how this does!

Worked like a charm - after doing this the engine fired right up today with no problems at all :D

I'm back in business.

LOL, and you did this w/o Ratzo??? I figured we would finish breaking it in at the NEXT bash..........

I was afraid I'd confuse someone with all that text. Here are two pictures to show what I've done.

This is how you would normally install the backplate on a rotostart.

What I did was placed a nut before the axle and the backplate:

What this does was stop the axle from spinning away from the engine and deeper into the rotostart (which would cause the rotostart to just spin) because now the dead space is filled with the nut that I've placed between them. By getting rid of the dead space the axle stays close to the engine and thus deeper into the one-way bearing.


Hope this clears it up a bit.

Why is there space there? Is that a result of your roto-start back? I'm sticking with the rope so I should be ok.
