Thanks ross, but I'm not sure if I can get anything but a 49T spur for the Savage X. Should I go up to 19 or 20 on the CB? Will that still fit in there?

I will have the wheelie bar to help with that, but I'd rather not have it so annoying. I also want to get the 3 speed but I just realized that won't help anything as 1st gear is 10% shorter than the 2 speed.

Damn thats right, I forgot that there is no 47T spur for the "X". That is the only reason I didn't jump on the HPI "X" conversion kit that is being distributed on eBay. I'd assume that they are going to come out with a 47T very soon. You can fit 18/49 in there but it is going to be a very tight fit. Your motor will be all the way up against the TVP and the flywheel will also be extremely close to the TVP. You will still get mad wheelies with 18/49 but as you noted you don't have a choice. I don't think 19/49 will fit. I would not bother with the 3-speed. You don't need it with one of these super powerful motors.

I was told to run the 086 top end pipe on the Picco .28.It still has tons of lowend plus it will help it rev more on topend..

According to the Specs @ Ofna.com the .28 is not a high revving motor and with its big displacement and Picco design I'd expect it to have a ton of low-end. You are better off running a pipe that exploits a motor's strong points instead of trying to make up for its weak points. You should then gear properly to take advantage of the motor's power band. For this motor I'd look for a pipe designed for a strong low and mid range. In any event, all of the pipes mentioned in this thread will work nicely with the motor. The differences will be small.

Good point, with the 18T CB I will probably be able to get this thing as fast as I could want haha. Do you think it would be worth converting to the old slipper design and puttin a 47 on there?

I would imagine 18/49 would fit ok, I mean it does come with the kit and all.

I have a 3 shoe aluminum clutch, should I keep the stock set up in there, maybe that would reduce the punch off the line a bit lol.

I was told the Picco .28 revs really high for a monster block (larger than a .21).And he has tried a number of different pipes and the 086 has worked the best so far for him..

I currently have the discontinued picco .27 in my savvy and it does enough for me. I am running 18/49 geearing and have .5" lcg tvps and it picks the front end up about 3 - 5 feet of the line, which is good so the torque is a tad off of idle giving you better conditions on your diffs etc. I have a THS pipe on it and the top end is good i guess (this is my first aftermarket engine and pipe stetup so i have nothing to compar it to). Also for the clutch i have a nova setup with the biggest weight on the end (i think) and 1.1 springs in :).
Hope this helps.

a wasp 28 if your lookin for power & speed........i love mine.......the only drawback on the wasp is its a pain to tune but when you do get the thing tuned it screams.......also its built tight & may have to be heated with a heatgun on the first startup or 2 to make it turn over easier on starting it up.........the hpi rotostart will fit it and so will the clutch setup

I've had two wasp .28s. They are pretty powerful if and when you get it tuned right. I only had mine tuned right for about 1 or 2 tanks the whole time I had it. During that time it was pretty impressive, but I would not suggest going with a Wasp if anyone else is looking for an engine.

a 52t spur gear will fit in the savy with an 18t cb.........thats what I'm running in mine with the wasp.......

I just ordered a Pull-Start Non-Turbo Picco .28 from Tower. $199 for the motor + a few O'Donnell Monster Truck Big Block glow plugs - $30 coupon, no shipping charge. I think I got a great price. I am going to run it with the 9mm carb insert and the HPI polished dual chamber pipe.

I don't plan to install it right away because my 6-gallon Picco 26 is still running very strong.

Cool ross...you'll love that engine, mine has been treating me very well.

I am pretty sure that you can use the one that fits the .26, .27, and the HPI S-25.

Aww very nice, very nice indeed. Hopefully in the next week or two I'll be ready to buy a new Picco 28 for my MGT!

Hey WoodiE, look at post #13 and 14 of this thread :D

But yea, you'll love the Picco, it should make your MGT haul some ass.

AC48 - I tell you what you're not such a bad guy after all! Thx!

-Michael

I know you guys are talking about the Picco but the LRP 28 spec 3 makes my MGT haul alot of ass...Plus it's cheaper than the Picco..

There is a rotostart backplate available for it yes,

http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXHMG6&P=M

Well this is the item that was shipped to me when I ordered my Picco 28 and this is the INCORRECT backplate. The rotostart screws are to small for the backplate - the screws can be pushed right in. Comparing the screws that came with the rotostart to the pull starter there is a noticable difference between how wide the screw is, thus the reason why the rotostart just spins as explained in my MGT thread.

It's not the one way bearings, but the rotostart seperating from the backplace. Anyone know of a backplate that fits better for the .28 picco?

-Michael

Hmmm that sucks WoodiE.

I'm not sure if the Picco and Wasp .28s have the same backplate size, but I know that HPI rotostart for the S25 worked on my Wasp .28.
