I downloaded the most recent sopranos episode on a torrent site (A paid one, so its all legit) and after downloading it, I get sound but no picture. A link popped up for a error reading and said I didnt have the most recent "codec" installed. What is a codec and where can I download them so I can actually see the picture?

Another question related to torrent sites. Do these download slower than other sites? I know I used a different site that was a p2p sharing before and can download a video pretty quick, but this whol episode (a hour long) took the whole night.. Thought maybe it was just the file, so I started doing another one and it went just as slow.. Any ideas? (I'm running 800kbps off dsl. When I did a speed test it said I was running 970kbps)

Hey 4u2nv,

A codec is short for Code/Decode. Esentially, it is a file that tells your media player what type of media file you have and how to play it. The error message you are recieving should be fixed by downloading the appropriate codec. Does it by chance tell you what codec you are missing? What type of file format did you download the episode in? What media player are you using?

As far as your next question.... the speed at which your internet connection is does not always dictate how fast you are able download. It all depends on several factors. You can only download as fast as the server you are connecting to can send you data, and depending on how many connections the sever is handling at once will greatly effect speed. Bandwidth is a funny thing sometimes. It is frustrating to have a high speed connection and still have download times much slower. I hope this helps.

A "Codec" is a "Coder-Decoder". The name comes from COde-DECode. Gotta love nerd-slang, lol.

Now, as for the codec you'll need; 99% of the time, when a file extension is .AVI, it's a DIVX codec that's needed. Divx.com is the site you'll want to visit to download the codec.

Cool thanks for the help fellas. I was able to get it fixed. Its a .avi file.. Now I gotta try to figure out how to burn to a dvd and what program to use..lol.. I'm a computer doofus.

Your welcome my friend. Glad we could help. I use Nero to make my DVD's, it is pretty cheap and you can find it at just about anyhere that sells software. If you need any help just let us know. Take care my friend.

Just download K-lite mega codec pack or ace mega code pack and you'll basically have all the codecs you ever need. Both packs are free too

Nero version 6.5 and above include dvd-authoring tools. I beleive nero recode is the product that you'll want. I'm not sure, because I don't do that many video-dvd's.
