So, i finally take my savage ss out bashing... first time ever drivin a nitro beast out in the dirt.... and it went through it's first take of gas nearly flawlessly, like a fiddlesticking champ (a few glitching issues,... but i think it's only cuz i was using crappy energizer batteries) so i go and get some new batteries, take like 30 minutes putting them in,... (damn hot bodies rollcage and other misc. crap in the way of the receiver box) and finally get ready for tank #2... and it takes me a good 10 minutes just to get the thinig running again, and when it did, the engine would rev like crazy but not go anywhere, i'd lift it off the ground and the wheels would spin but they were real easy to stop them... so to me, that seems like my clutch shoes are all burnt up... but how would it happen so quickly? i don't hold the thing and gun it,... only when starting to a give it gas but force it to be stationary, i wouldn't thinik that little of spinning it would burn the shoes so quickly. Do they not last long? I don't know, i think i'm gonna goto my lhs later today, but if any of you have any ideas or suggestions please let me know....

also, one issue i was having while it was working (only when in the dirt) was that the brake lever would get stuck in the forward (engaged) position, i'd have to manually push it back... have a lot of you had the problem and would the OFNA brake/throttle linkage mod fix that?

Thanks, Loren

i had a problem with my flywheel spinning on the colet.. you got the ss, did you have to put the flywheel and stuff on? if you you may not have gotten it tight enough.. mine would just spin.. on the brakes.. i havent had that problem.. again you had to put it together.. did you put the little brass thing in there?? double check your brake setup.. you may have missed a part..

The HPI 3-shoe setup I installed on my SS lasted over 5 gallons behind a very strong motor.

Is there a slipper on the savage? I'm not a savage owner, but the slipper may be loose...

there is a slipper on the Savage. Tighten down all of the way, and back off 1/4 turn. If the slipper is too loose, it will melt down the spur gear in no time.

When I first got my SS, I had this same problem. Except I kept on breaking the actual springs themselves. I eventually replaced them w/ ofna 1.1 springs, and then later got the MBX-4 clutch set-up. Then, recently, upgraded to nova shoes.

yea, the slipper was a bit loose, i tightened it but still have the same problem... so maybe by having that too loose i burned up the shoes, not sure,... i'll take it apart this weekend and take a look....

Might want to check the pins that are behind your hexes on your tires. I had a couple fall out on my Nitro MT and it acted like something was slipping. The tires wouldn't move, but the drive shafts were sure spinning like crazy!

so i took it apart, and aparently the lock nut behind the flywheel had loosened.... so that was the first problem,... also, 2 of the springs on my clutch shoes had broken.... the shoes themselves seemed fine. I'm just wondering if any of you have had this problem or know why it possibly happened? i don't want to take my engine out and replace springs every few tanks.... i'll just put a lot more loctite on the nut, so that should hold, but i don't want the springs breaking,... i don't see how or why they could've broken....

Not really sure, but it seems like a loose flywheel nut would break the springs. I bet after you tighten the nut and replace the springs, everything will be fine.

When I had the problem, I suspected it was due to a loose flywheel, but before I got a chance to fix it, I ditched the stock clutch set-up for a Mugen one, then later got Nova shoes for it...

i was looking into getting a beefier set up, what is the difference with the mugen set up? Is it a straight swap or is there modification needed? Is it the same flywheel set up, it seems to me if the flywheel locked into the crank somehow it wouldn't have that problem as much, you know? so, how do you like it cvec? i was also thinking about getting aluminum shoes, is it worth it?

the flywheel slipping will cause the springs to get worn down.. not sure how but when mine was slipping it caused the springs to get ground down right where the spring touches the nut.. I'm guessing the flywheel spinning and the nut not caused the springs to get worn down right there.. which caused them to get weak and break.. yours prolly did the same thing i had to put a small washer behind my collet to keep it from loosing up again.

my hyper did the same thing this weekend, i tightend the hell outa it and it still slipped.. i ended up having to replace the collet. if yours loosens up again you may want to change the collet or put in a washer..

sorry to sound retarded, but what's the collet, bc that sounds like exactly what happened, the springs looked britle where they rubbed against the nut....
so you think just a washer will do w/o having to do a whole new clutch setup like the mugen?

do your self a favor and buy some aluminum or carbon shoes...aluminum will be more bite but more maintenancce (have to debur the shoes every 1/2 gallon or so)...the carbon will give good bite but not need to be deburred and they don't last as long.....use 1.0 or 1.1 springs and you'll see a nice MT setup....of course this is assuming your shoes are fried too...if not just get some springs and you should be good to go....while your in there change the CB bearings too if you don't like taking the beast apart.....cause you will neeed to do it sooner or later.....

You have the SS 4.6 or 25 RTR right? If so, the stock 3-pin flywheel is fine, just get new shoes and springs. I went to the mugen 3-shoe clutch cause my SS came w/ the 2-shoe set-up. If I were to get a new clutch, it'd probably be the werks one. But the nova shoes are great, you can add weights for later engadgement if you want, and get great bite.
