I have abunch of extra red springs and I was wondering if I clip one or two rings off will it make them less firm.
 
It will lower the ride. If you don't get a flat ring on the end of the spring, similar to what's there now, it will not center on the shock.
 
if the ring isn't remade as said before, it'll probably just come of the spring retainer all together, it won't make it much softer if at all, might even make it stiffer as you're getting rid of metal that bends to make the spring, like cutting a leaf spring in half, it'll reduce the leverage on the coils
