Chem lesson: Rubbing alcohol is isopropyl alcohol, your fuel is methanol alcohol mixed with oil and nitro methane. Denatured alcohol is the same as Ethel alcohol. Ethel alcohol is drinking alcohol. but denatured alcohol is Ethel alcohol that has been changed to prevent it from being drinkable. You can get denatured alcohol at Home Depot or Lowe's in the paint section. it is used as a solvent.

:wtf: Ok now...who the hell is right ??Would like to know cuz I'm all messed-up !!! I heard its a solvant...so guys let me know please so i can give my savage a bath !!!

i usually take mine apart and wash it with hot soapy water and a toothbrush , i dont believe in buying all tha crap to clean it, my way does the job, and if you dont have an air compressor dont waste all that money on little compressed air bottles, just let it dry off or use a hair dryer , just my 2 cents!

Seconded here. Denatured alcohol is pretty much aimed at cleaning grime off stuff, and as a paint remover. It tends to be a much stronger solvent than isopropyl/rubbing alcohol

Rubbing alcohol, on the other hand, is "toned down" for use on skin, as a disinfectant. As stated above, it has an additive to it that makes it unsuitable for drinking.

However, methanol is wood-based alcohol. The actual name for glow fuel is "nitro methanol", since it's part nitro, part methanol alcohol (as well as assorted additives and oils). The "nitro".... That I'm not too sure exactly what chemical it is, since it's not nitro glyceral.

You are correct on your chems. Isopropyl alcohol is available in the drug store, and denatured alcohol is in the hardware or paint store.
Both work well for cleaning, but the DA is more effective since it's a stronger solvent.
Rubbing alcohol is also good to spray on wet parts since it mixes with water and evaporates quickly. Keep some handy in a pump spray for those times when you hit a puddle and mess your electronics.

I've used brake cleaner on all my trucks for several years with out any damage to the plastic. If you have used it and have not damaged the plastic then it's ok to use it.

You used it on a savage for a couple of years...without any damage to the plastic ??!?? MMMMMMmmmmm, think i might just give it a shot with the brake cleaner and see...thanks

I don't think it necessarily damages the plastic, but it certainly eats any lubes you might have had on your rig. Brake cleaner will break down grease & oil on contact, leaving you with a no lubrication.

:goodpost: I've use th brake cleaner...and it work good !!! re-lubed that baby up and...guess what---READY TO BASH AGAIN !!!!!!!!!! :thankyou:

Thanks for the heads-up !!!:radio:

I use non-chlorinated brake cleaner if it makes a difference. Sure it takes the grease away that's what I want it to do. I just lube the truck up again. It certainly doesn't hurt to clean the bearings then relube them in fact you should be doing this. Nitro Blaster does the same thing. The brake cleaner is a lot cheaper. I get it for $14.00 a case.

YEP !!! not too sure about triying brake cleaner again! Just to be on the safe side, gonna get myself some DA for sure.THANKS EVERYBODY:bow:

Don't know what you're worried about, you used it and it worked fine. However to each his own. Like I said, been cleaning my trucks for several years with no problems but hey good luck with what ever you use.

The brake cleaner is just about the same as nitro blaster. But it's a lot cheaper. If you use Simple Green make sure you still lube everything up. SG takes the oil & grease off also.

eartaker is right, with leaving out the parts about what is suitable for drinking...
denatured alcohol is not rubbing alcohol...it is a solvent, and would be found with paints, or possibly cleaning supplies. it may remove paint, but should be safe for plastics. i notice mostly everyone uses it, so it must be relatively harmless to plastics, but is perfect for cutting oils and grease (for if you plan to paint something for instance) and if you've ever spray painted anything with any type of oil, wax or silicone, it will not stick, and will do what is know as "fisheye", where the paint sort of makes a circle around the spot where the contamination is. you wont hurt anything metal with any type of solvent or cleaner, just watch out for anything rubber or plastic...including air filters!
i've also read a good post about how to make a parts cleaner that is the next best thing to a sonic parts cleaner, if ya want the info on that, let me know.
