checking engine temps HELP!!!

i have an axial .28 in my savage and need to know where i should be checking engine temp with my temp gun? point at glow plug,on the cooling head ,or on the case where i have been checking it cuz that is where i get the hottest temps? i nam breaking engine in at just a bit leaner than factory settings(1/8 of a turn leaner ) and it is in 250 plus range below the cooling head and it is still way rich. thanks badmofo
