just bought a slash with lipo. i don't know much about electrics and can't decide which charger to go with. i'm looking at a protek charger for around 220. seems a little pricey to me, i don't know if i should cheap out or get a good one. can you help me please.

I bought a sky charger from hobbyparts. I paid like 60 bucks and it does everything I could want. I have used it for about 5 months now with no problems.

I would keep looking $220 is way too expensive IMO. I am still using a cheap($80) Duratrax Lipo charger for the last year and a half but I have to balance the batteries w/ an external balancer. Most Lipo chargers that you buy you also have to buy a power supply which can get expensive as well that is why I bought the Duratrax, the power supply is internal and it has an LCD display, not the best charger out there but it works fine for sport use. My buddy just bought the Hyperion EOS 0606 charger and is real happy with it because it will charge Nimh and Lipo's up to 6s, has built in balancer, and built in P/S for $139.00.

I love these chargers and for 33.00 you cannot go wrong,it has a built in balance plug also..

Wow I might need to pick one of those up as well 33 bucks. I can run both and cut down on charge time.

Oops now that I looked at it, It is DC only. no good for me in the house.

Thee sky charger has AC built in, when you add the price of a power supply the price is about the same and it is one more thing in my tool box.

Check into a Thunder AC 6, I have one and love it, it is all self contained does ALL batteries the are used in RC, balance, discharge ETC. If you look around (google) sometimes you can find them with free shipping. I got mine from Hobby partz 55.00 plus 4.95 shipping. Even the hobby shop I deal with local is now going to start stocking them. It's small and compact comes with every adaptor you need and mine came with a temp probe. You can't go wrong with it.

Questions about chargers and batteries
When racing we run about 3 times during the course of the day not back to back we have about 2 to 3 classes in between with a bout 20-30 min in between runs and we run a 10min main.
If I was to get a 3s 5000 mah lipo on the Vxl brushelss system what type of charging habits should I get into cause I see guys run off the track to hook things back up to chargers. and after reading a lil bit its not good to quick charge lipos OK so what get 2 batteries? And swap out after every race? Use one batt for the whole day? Whats the deal?

I use the venom pro, and it comes with the power supply and about every charge adapter you could ever need, and it balances.

madmax, how long are your races? 5kmah should last quite awhile on a single motor setup.

but even at 2 or 3 amps, your charger should be able to replenish whatever you use before the next race, and with lipo, you dont have to worry about when you charge. you can charge them at any time.

Beason our first 3 are about 5 min runs. With the last being the 10 min main.

So with a nice charger and Lipo after each run just charge it and a slow 2 or 3 amps? and I should be good?

it depends on the pack. one of mine says to not charge over 1a. the other says to charge between 2 and 3.2 only. as long as your pack will do 3a, you should be fine. as long as there is an hour or more between heats.
