Hello, I have a 1989 or so (not sure what year, the book says 1991) Inferno 4 wheel drive 1/8 scale .21 gas racing buggy. It was given to me with the understanding that the center differential gear was chewed, that the clutch bell was missing and that the gas tank had a hole. I was given phone numbers and all, but they are all a dead end. I need help finding those parts, first and foremost that plastic gear or the whole differential as well as the clutch bell housing. Everywhere I go I keep being told to get rid of it and buy a new one and no one can tell me where I can look for those parts. I also do n't want to spend $100 on a differential for something that is almost 20 years old. I am just looking for a good used part that will work for $30 or so dollars just so that I can get it to run. Can anyone seriously help? Thanks guys...

To start with, what kind of Inferno? Kyosho's inferno name was used on several cars. Second off, your best bet is to check e-bay. Thats about your best chance.

That era you may be looking at the PRE MP 7.5 series. I think you may have to bring it to the hobby shop to find out what parts from theMP7.5 series will be compatible.

I took the car at the Hobby shop in North Austin Texas and they told me to toss it because it was too old for them and because the motor is an O.S. and not the original one. I think it is because they did not know anything about this car. But will look into that pre Mp7.5. I cannot believe that it is impossible to find a frigging plastic gear to screw on that differential with a matching bell clutch. It seems like there is something that can be done. I could not find the number of teeth that the wheel is supposed to have since it has been chewed, but I found at this website http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXMYW7&P=M a gear that might fit, but not sure...

Only thing I can suggest is to try bringing in the center diff assembly you have and try to compare it to a kyosho part for the MP7.5 series.

You may also be able to use a standard tank from it.

Bring it to another LHS, it seemsd like the one you are going to is not wanting to help much.

Exactly; Shortly after I left the shop I worked at, the attitude went from newbie friendly to "if it has two wheels, flies, or floats, don't bother". Check into another shop, and mention that you have a first-generation inferno.

You may also want to contact Kyosho directly. I had to do that way-back when I owned an Optima electric.

take a pic of the gear or the diff. and I might be able to help you out. I have a 7.5 right now, and am looking for a metal diff gear for mine. I have probably come across the one you need somewhere.

Ok, I have difficulties loading a picture here. Is there anyway I can contact you dirrectly, I have pictures. Wouldyou have a matching clutch bell housing.

I have yet to figure out how to take it out of its car housing...

I think I have uploaded the pictures. If you cannot see please let me know. I have yet to figure out how to remove that differential assembly... It looks like I only need the gear because there are 4 screws that hold it. I will take the whole thing if Ihave to just in case.

Looks like you need a clutchbell. Also your center diff looks to be shielded. I can't tell what you have under it or what it looks like.

Nope, that's one bald baby of a spur.

To get that assembly out, it's pretty easy. See the four phillips screws on top of the silver rectangular piece? Remove TWO on one end (doesn't matter which). Undo the throttle servo linkage. Now, flip car over, and find the four screws on the bottom that are in paralel to the screws on that silver bracket. The whole center diff should literally fall out.

Remember how it goes back together.

Hope that helps!

SNAP! HB you are correct... I thought it was a older version of a center diff cover. I would really look into changing that to a different type material.a

Agreed; once he gets the diff out, then I'm pretty sure finding one that mates up and is about the same diameter (which means it'd be plus or minus a tooth) in metal shouldn't be all that hard. Just call around and ask if the shop stocks 8th scale parts. Or take a spin out to the local track; someone out there will most likely be willing to allow you to size that spur against theirs if you ask them nice enough.

Ok, here are some pictures and measurements. Thanks for the help taking it down; a little more involved but very close...
Based on my digital caliper measurements, a good American 1/4 is 24.24 mil. Sometimes they are not very accurate... So, the differential wheel without the teeth is 48.75 mil and the motor shaft is 5.14 mil; are those measurements close to your 7.5 and does the plastic wheel look the same; 4 screws. I don't care what it is metal or plastic, I just want to rig something so that I can enjoy the car and as long as it is not too expensive... Thanks... Now, the gear mesh is very important because I do not want to chew that thing again. Just let me know if there are other places than Hobby Lobby. I guess they do not have the financial incentive to dig into this stuff...

Try asking Tower Hobbies. You may get some help there. I really do think a swap to a modern Diff would be a good shot.

Wow, that's gonna be a toughy. I do know that there are models that used the removable spur like that; the older MP6 might be about the closest fit. Even then, that's been discontinued for a while; GS Storm diffs are practically the same thing. Jon, bein the Storm Trooper around here, might be able to provide you with a length and bearing inner diameter. Then all you'd need is a Storm center diff, break discs (2), and a clutch bell.

I have taken the differential to a kind of race they have on Saturdays, north Austin off of 1; I was greeted by bovine looks, as if my diff came from outer space. I keep thinking that there is something out there but I am not sure how to go about it. I went to a couple of other shops that made an effort to look through their parts and came up with a couple of metal ones but they did not have the big opening in the center only the same screw pattern. Everywhere I go and ask if they could look at other makers, other models, they say it has to be Kyosho; I am getting the feeling that they are trying to shut me down. I would be willing to dremel something. There was one metal gear as big as mine (without the teeth) but a very tiny center. I did not take it. I may have to buy it as a last resort and take it to a machine shop maybe? The problem with that is that it needs to have the same size as my chewed one with a tooth length extra and that has not happened yet....

Believe me I would do it if I were given an opportunity to compare and contrast with a modern differential. But where ever I go, I feel I have the plague and they will not show me their differential or they say they would have to order it.
