So I got slammed into in the Pro Buggy main this past weekend on lap 1. My car cartwheeled no less than @ 10 times after getting hit....and it ended with a flameout. My pit man fired her back up and threw me back out....a lap later coming onto the front straight the entire field heard the dreaded "TINK!" sound. Apparently, my upper filter got knocked off in the crash and I drove a full lap with no air filter on a dusty track. This was the resulting damage :-( Goodbye sweet Alpha.....you were just getting to your "sweet spot" at 1.5 gallons on you :-(

That's racing for ya....lol Had bad luck ALL day except round 1 qualifying. I stripped the front diff pinion in Round 2, blew my engine up in the main. It was a crappy day all around ;-)

That sucks about the engine. Guess that means it's time for another Alpha and lots of practice laps for its break-in.

I'm sponsored by Alpha actually ;-) I still have to buy engines.....but yeah. It was just a freak racing incident. I got hit at the just angle and speed to pop the filter off. My engines show up hand lapped so break in is a breeze ;-)

..and yeah definitely another Alpha. This engine was just getting its stride and was already outrunning a LOT of more expensive engines out there. It's really hard to beat the price point of an Alpha Plus, especially for the longevity you get (unless your filter pops off!). I've been running them for 3 years now, this is my first year sponsored....and I have gotten no less than 8 gallons out of each Alpha Plus I have run thus far....and when I sold them....the next guy bolted it up and went racing. Stock Bearings...Stock ConRod....no parts needed in those first 8 gallons. I had it pinched and sold it.... He loves it ;-)

Yeah it shattered pretty good! A large chunk of it got lodged between the crank and the case too stopping the crank near instantaneously and actually loosening my clutch nut. haha Musta been a tad violent inside when it happened ;-)

Almost makes you wish you could get a camera in there as it breaks in HD and super slomo and just see it go bye bye :hehe:

If that were my engine, I woulda thrown the cover over my rig and forgot about it just because nitro is so expensive..

Nitro is only expensive from time to time, or if you are just getting into it. The Alpha Plus engines are @ $200 each brandy new. I actually bought an engine/pipe combo from a vendor at Psycho Nitro Blast for $229. That's hard to beat in my mind. Some guys are died hard "Italian or Die!" fanboys. I'm a big fan of spending the least amount of money I can to get a great running engine that will last me awhile. Alpha Plus fits that to a T. The Red Head is $199. New PSR is like $80 for it as well. Hard to beat IMHO.

This was just a fluke. Never blown a conrod in any engine before....well my first Nova might have blown one. I dunno. It made weird noises...I threw it away. lol

Yeah hand lapping is basically removing the Piston and sleeve and putting some lapping compound on them (special oil) and basically just wearing them together for a certain amount of time in an attempt to closely match the surfaces together before ever starting the engine. For instance, the engine I just blew up was an Alpha Plus Z852. Typically the Alpha Plus engines take 1-2 gallons of break in time. The hand lapped version took me @ 8 tanks. Tank #9 I was running a qualifier with a race tune ;-)
