Hi everyone,

I’d like to ask for your help with practical tips on properly carbureting a HARM SX5 using a Walbro 990 carburetor.

I’ve read quite a bit and watched several videos, but in real track conditions I still struggle to clearly understand when to open or close the L and H needles, and how to correctly interpret engine symptoms. Many times I’m not fully confident whether the engine is running rich or lean, so I end up playing it safe — sacrificing performance and top speed just to be able to finish the race without risking the engine.

I’d really like to better understand:
  • How to set a proper baseline from scratch
  • Clear symptoms of rich vs lean conditions
  • Typical adjustments based on ambient temperature and track conditions
  • Common mistakes when tuning a Walbro 990 on 1/5 scale cars
  • Any step-by-step tuning method that works well for you during race days

Any tips, references, or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance 🙌🏼

2stroke engine?
You have to learn the sounds that the engine makes. It is speaking to you, it takes some time to learn what it is saying.
Between temperatures of the block, how the engine sounds, and how it performs will tell you how to tune.
