Hey, I almost just bought my savage and i can't get it to idle. Its not the idle screw because it does idle high enough then it just cuts off. Can yall help me.

oh i have broke it in. It will not even crank up without pulling the trigger about half way. I have played with the needles but it just wont idle right. It idles for like 2 seconds and cuts off.

reset all to factory and try again look in the book and get the settings but i think its 4.5 out on high needle and 3 out on low needle and 2mm gap on idle.. then try it and let us know..

But in the book it says after break in the hsn will range from 2 1/2 to 3.

Is your linkage adjusted properly, and your trim off?
Take off the air cleaner and watch the barrel in the carb as you apply trigger. If you go half trigger before it starts to open, you need to adjust your linkage.
Turn your trim all the way off before adjusting your idle opening.

whatever the book says for factory settings set it there.. mine says 4.5 out and 3 out.. maby you have diff motor..

Make sure you don't have any air leaks and start back at factory settings.

For the .25 start here:
High speed needle 4 1/2 turns from closed
Low spped needle 3 turns from closed

The 4.6 settings are:
The carburetor features a factory re-set line on the high speed needle and "flushed" needles that make re-setting the carb to the baseline factory specifications quick and easy

You might need to adjust the carb opening. I know the .25 should be open 2mm to get proper air flow for idle. I am not sure of the 4.6 but it is probably the same or very close.

rolex is a master tuner follow what he says and hell get ya running.....***just to be clear he wants you to do the above with the engine off ...never run your engine without the aircleaner!!

You can if your not around any dust... Theres a guy at my lhs thats really good at tuning and he tuned mine without the cleaner on so he could see everything...

i guess you can expessialy if you can run indoors ......but i wouldnt

once you set idle gap & check for correct movement i dont see where it would be worth it to tune without an aircleaner...when you put the aircleaner on it will change the air flow & tune

my 2 cents

Yeah...but 4 1/2 turns is way to rich all it does is bog and cut off. I dont know what is wrong with my rig. It just dont want to run right at all. I have to constantly tune it.

Start with a new glow plug. Set the HSN where the manual recommends.
Start it. If it still quits after 2 seconds, the problem is in your LSN. First richen it 1/8 turn and see if it improves. If you see a slight improvement, richen it a little more till it will idle.
If, when richening it, nothing changes, or it gets worse, reset it to where it was, but now lean it 1/8.
Sometimes it will help to leave the glow ignitor on till it keeps idling.
The idle is determined by the idle screw and the LSN. Adjusting the LSN will usually need a change in the idle setting also.
Don't be messing with both needles. One thing at a time, or you'll never get it right.

make sure the throttle/brake linkage screw isn't dead tight as well. with the truck turned off you want to set the idle screw about the thickness of a credit card. when you apply the brake it should only be open 1mm. i have a 4.6 and always start at 3 turns out on hsn and 1/2 turn in from flush with lsn. i usually never have to touch the hsn really.

I think that the glow plug may have something to do with it I changed my glow plug from the factory plug to a shorter medium plug and it idled, differently, not more or less, just different and set it at factory def a good idea

i dont think that is acurate because i set mine to that and my motor seized. be careful!

peace, Mark

yea that is way to lean i think its like 4 1/2 or sumthin i tune mine to temps. well every tank.

I'll set the needles to factory, put a new glow plug in it and see how that works. Thanks for all of the replies.
