I am scouting around at the moment for a better ESC and motor for my Wheely King Basher project. I was just wondering if going for something too speed oriented would do more harm than good?

I am currently running an old Tamiya Dynatech 01R, it's about a 19T and it's not in it's first flush of youth to say the least. I'm gonna try re-brushing it and cleaning the commutator up but I don't have a lathe so I dunno how that'll go.

I've been looking at about 15T motors with matching ESCs, or for the ultimate in credit card melting, a Losi Xcelorin S brushless system (don't know what turn rating would be best on that though). Am I shooting at too low a turn rating? Anyone offer any gems of though?

Brushless.
If not, get some commutator oil. You won't believe the increase in RPMs and motor life. Upgrade all you bushings to ball bearings. Make sure your tires are securely glued.

Yeh i'd love a Brushless setup for it. I've got a crawler to bring up to spec first and a DX6i to save up for before that though.

you should probs get a brushless because they are less maintenence and will last u for longer but make sure u get a matching esc though cause other wise u will jst start melting wires

The diffs in the WK wont hold brushless as is. The good news is the steel gears from the Nitro MT, (NOT the MT2) will fit straight in!

they also make a hardened ring and pinion for the WK. the pinion is a one peice instaed of 2 and if shimmed correctly, they will hold up to quite a bit of abuse

Well I can't afford a brushless rig anyway, so it's a bit of a non-issue at current, but thanks for your good advice, I'll bear it in mind in the future.

I know about the hardened ring and pinion gears off the MT, I have the part number on file for them so I can order some when my stock ones strip out. Anyone know a part number for the shims HPI use for those diffs?

I popped a couple of 9.9V A123 packs in the WK this afternoon and had a bit of a thrash around and that extra bit of voltage makes a huge difference. I was having a barrel of fun. I'v got a nice Handwound 27T on the way from a guy I know who has them made up to order, so I'll see what that does for life also.

If you can find someone with a lathe it will do wonders for your 19t, you would be amazed how out of round your commutator can be which makes the brushes bounce and causes poor contact, maybe your local hobby store has one, usually costs about 5 bucks

I think the comm is shot on it, it's got a dip in the middle where the bushes have run on it. I've got a buddy who's got a truer for squaring up coms and he's gonna have a look at it for me.

I pretty much answered my own question really. I put the 19T fast motor in the WK and it wasn't gutsy enough on the grass and overheated the ESC. Sure I could get a better ESC or a brushless combo but one would probably not help a lot and the other is very expensive and likely to rip the drive train open :)
