I have a little downtime with my truck while I am saving to buy a new motor, and I was wondering if an os .18 cvr could be put in a newer version of the t-maxx. I don't want a pull start, I would like to keep my ez start. The reason I am asking this is the .18 cvr is $90, and the drop in os motor for the t-maxx is $215. I figure the .18 cvr can't be a drop in, so what else would I need to make it work, and would it be any cheaper than going the drop in route? if the cheaper mill is down on power a little bit compared to the drop in one, I don't mind, what I am really after is reliability and ease of tuning, it doesn't have to be a fire breather.

hey Jared,
I don't know if you can bolt the EZ starter on it but I think the CVr is side exhaust and the longer crank....you can cut the longer crank to fit....carefully you only get one shot...or from what I see you can't get the one w/ the long crank and pullstart....HMMM....you might have to get the short crank w/ a pilot shaft and that model comes w/ the rotary carb.....easier to hook up the linkage to and you can dump the bellcrank for the throttle too.....either way you need to do some modding......not expensive but most people are skeered of cutting new stuff......I ain't skeered...lol

You can't get the cvr and have the easy start. They do however make a t-maxx version... and for $215, i think it would be a good deal.

save the time and trouble and get an O.S. .18 , drop it in and go. spend a little more and get your money's worth.

That sucks. Being the cheapo that I am, I was trying to find a loophole for the $215 and I was even thinking about getting rid of my t-maxx, but I guess I'll have to cough it up.

You can install it, but like others said, I don't think you can use the ez-start. But, beings it's an OS and I've ran one, 2 pulls and it's running.

You would need:
OS 18 w/ slide carb $99
Duratrax pipe/header $26
Clutch adapter $5

This might help with the cutting of the crank: AE Cutting Nut
Basically, you screw it on, cut the shaft, then screw it back off to straighten out the threads.

So, around $130 would get you a solid engine installed. Also, you could choose just about any side exhaust engine with a slide carb and wouldn't be limited as much.

With the engine, you'd need to cut the crankshaft off a little bit so it isn't so long. But other than that, these parts should bolt right in. You'd also loose a bit of weight since the EZ-start would be gone. But you would need to carry a normal glow heater.

OOO OOO Just at Southeast....you can get a rotostart type back plate for the CV-R engines....of course that means changing all your starter stuff or just chuck the shaft in a drill.......the plates are about 20 bucks.....but after all this stuff your already close enough to the .18 TM you may aswell do that......Olds is right the OS starts real easy w/ the pull starters....just don't swing your arm like it's a lawnmower and they don't break......but you will have to learn that limp wristed pull.....LOL

click on this link and it will walk you thru the total install of the cvrx into the tmaxx
i did it and do not regret it at all, it has awsume low end and just a screamin 18 for the maxx
$90 bucks for the cvrx is well worth it even if you have to chop the crank
but it only takes about an hour or so to complete the ready to drop in process ,
well worth the time and effort ,i also used the traxxas blue header and the traxxas blue tuned pipe
hope this will help ya alittle
take care

i'd suggest a heavyweight flywheel for the .18 engines. i kept burning mine up, and when i finally just upgraded to a duratrax vented flywheel a lot of my problems went away. anyway gl with your upgrade, i'm doing the same thing right now with my gen1 maxx.

Burning what up? The engines or the flywheels or what?

Just curious.

I had the OS 18 cv-r(x) in my HPI NMT and the flywheel was ridiculously heavy and made for slow spool up of the RPM's. But I don't think I even got the engine broken in (10 tanks) before I sold the truck.

sorry, flywheels. for some reason whenever i used mip's or traxxas ones they would just get chewed up. that problem when away when i went with something a little stronger. "heavier" may have been the wrong work to use.

i run a rrp vented in mine and it is awsume ,
the whole damn package is wicked for the price ,the only problem i ran into when doing the upgrade was that the stock bell did not sit totally onto the new shaft so i use very small washers and shimmed the clutch pads slightly so they were complete covered by the bell ,i do not know the size i just found them in my box and they were a matching set so i used them and i also installed a new traxxas high stall clutch pads with my 16t bell and 72t spur ,i gotta change it to maybe 18t or back to 20t bell simply becasue it is almost uncontrollable on low end
in grass all it wants to do is wheelie and on good black top wheelie city also ,

it most likely just me but i can not find a happy medium with my slipper (RRP daul disk slipper) to get it just right ,

is it winding out real fast when you ping it full throttle???
If not then try (if yuo have it on your radio) setting the Expo to be real slow on your throttle...I just started playing w/ that when i was running my truck the last time....worked very well....stopped the front from coming up too fast...I had the power there if I wanted or i could slow my finger down as well and keep it under control.....
