I had a quote from someone that builds computers and id like to know if this is a good deal or a rip. I know he can build some kick ass computers so his ability isnt a problem. Heres the quote:

For a top of the line machine your cost will be $1600, now when I say top
of the line I mean it. This is pretty close to the machine I built one year ago
for about $3000 (lol). Of course, LifeTime 24 hr tech support will be included
at this price...Now if thats out of your price range, (It sort of helps if I
know your budget)
Details:
for video editing: Ati All in Wonder x600 pci express
MoBo/Cpu/RAM : Asus A8v-e deluxe/ Athlon 64 3500/ 1 Gb dual channel DDR2 corsair
PC 4000
Hard drives : primary OS drive SATA 10000 rpm 36 gig Maxtor, secondary storage
drive 250 gig SATA maxtor 7200 rpm
Sound: Creative Audigy Zs 6.1 channel surrond sound board
Case : Antec Sonata with antec true 480 W PS
Burner: Plextor DVD/CD burner with a second pionner DVD/CD rom drive.
Plus a Teac floppy, onboard gigaLAN support

This Is indeed a Top of the Line machine
so we can cut corners here and there and get that price down a bit, but, of
course I really would not advise that. A word on Amd vs Intel. I have built
all my machines around Athlon processors, for the simple reason that when it
comes down to it they provide the most bang for your computing dollar. Some
people prefer Intel chips, and right now they (intel) are a somewhat less
expensive solution, however The trend in computing is towards 64 bit computing
and as of now Intel does not make a 64 bit Cpu yet, so I would not recommend a
pentium to anyone who is not looking for a really budget machine machine that
they never plan to upgrade or grow. Anyways get back to me and let me know what
you want to do.

What i am looking for is mainly:

processing speed...

video editing... for family purposes

Initially the bid was $1600...but I talked to him last night and we decided that all I gotta do is buy the parts and he will build it and my wife and i will build him a website for his electrical business.

Would that computer set up be a screamin deamon?????

$1600 sounds a bit steep.. I have bought & built my last 4 computers, with some help from a friend & bro-In-Law.. I would highly recommend buying your parts from www.newegg.com.

There prices are very fair, & shipping is pretty fast. I've never had a problem with there service. Good luck, sounds like a great machine..

ummm thats not top of the line.... thats lie a mid range budget/"expensive?"

its got a x600 in it and thats a pretty bad card. lifttime 24/7 support sounds like a rip... in all honesty is doesn't take much to build it yourself. ( no harder then an rc car ) and its cheaper and you know how to fix it / upgrade it.

as arrow said its not "top of the line" .. it is however in the sweet spot of performance vs value
i used pricewatch to cost out the componets & your looking at $1,350 give or take a couple dollars including shipping ....it is a very nice system and you would be verry happy with it ...but is it worth it to you to pay / trade him $250 to build it when you should be more than capabile? i have built many computers it is not that hard ...he would have it all built in 2 hours
my only sugestions would be to buy a pc power and cooling power supply instead of the antec and to spend the extra $50 - $60 on the 74 gig 10,000rpm hard drive instead of the 36 gig .......

hey your new buddy that you just met in dayton is a COMPUTER TECH and can build them to.. i would have to look at the individual parts prices to see if the price is right but it seems a bit steep

If your getting the computer at the price of parts(in trade of a site) How long will it take to design the site?

I would agree with the others. it's not top of the line. I've built a few computers myself and it's pretty much a no brainer. I use this place www.microx-press.com, they have good prices but they are also local for me so I can do a pick up. You can use them for pricing though, as they tend to show up in pricewatch with some lower prices.

I use the ADS Instant DVD 2.0 for video and have been happy with it, it comes with decent software but IME creating vids and such is just way too time consuming. So I really don't mess with it enough to compare it with others. Between that and my DVD burner, I have like three different video editing programs and I couldn't tell you what's the better of the three.

get the parts at directron or axiontech they are local (no shipping) and normaly pretty competative.. let me know if you need any more advice

Thanks for the input everyone....i will certainly look at all the links provided for parts. Thanks

Yeah thats the current plan..it will take about 3 days..working on it on and off between work and family. Maybe 4 at the most..but no more.

If you start buying the parts yourself, you can take advantage of some great deals, plus the rebates. The price he's giving you sounds high to me, so any savings HE's getting, isn't being passed on to you.
I have 1.7 Ghz. MoBo. 7200rpm 60Gb HD. I found a CD-RW for $10 after rebates. Same with mem chips. Some stuff came from Ebay, and other parts through Office Max. Everything is just plugs and screws. Not a big deal.
More time is spent setting up your preferences once you have the OS installed.
It's certainly not high end, but it's been rock solid for 2 years now. Everything together cost me $240, and it puts my $1000 HP with XP to shame.

I'm all for rebates..i didnt even think about that. Thanks for pointing that out. I have to get rid of this junker I'm on now. It keeps shutting down on me while browsing the internet. Its time for it to go...plus its 5 years old so this dinosaur is out of the window.

i spent about 1400 on my new computer i just built, like 400 something was from my video card the ati x800 pro i built mine for games

I absolutely despise rebates, but when something is on sale in the store, and ALSO has a mfgrs rebate with it, you can get it free. Keyboards and CDRoms are always available free, or $10. Last months model, maybe, but for free, it's a pretty good price.
Also, if you look around, you should NEVER pay more than a dollar per Gb for a hard drive. 80 Gb, you'll find them for $79.95 after rebate.
Cooling fans, Ebay. Case, Ebay or an old one. Memory, all over Ebay. Same with motherboards, audio and video cards and power supplies.
I actually enjoyed doing it, and got a major rush when it fired up for the first time.

memory and motherboard are two thing i try not to buy on ebay....also when it come to mb and ram you get what you pay for i will not buy cheap ram again it can cause more problems than its worth

Man last time I was at Fry's they had a 250GB Maxtor for less than $150, part of the savings was rebate but it was a great deal even if you didn't send in for the rebate. We're finally getting a Fry's here in Indianapolis, woohoo!! Now I won't have to stuff my suitcase full of junk everytime I'm out in CA. BTW, they have nice price on ty-wraps in colors in quantities of 100 or 1000.

Also check out www.tpi-us.com for parts and systems. I'm the warehouse manager for them. If you call and talk to a sales rep "Chip" is the best, they can set you up for just what you need.Tell them Wayne referd ya.

As much as you do McDonalds'? :hammer: LOL

I appreciate all the input everyone. I have lots of searching to do..those are some good links. I've searched through more than half of them..gotta keep looking.

Hopefully we can get working on it soon. My dinosaur can't take much more. :boxing:

LMAO........I'm impressed. That thread was quite a while ago. My cousin thanks you again.

Best of luck scrounging up the parts. You'll be amazed how much you can save by doing it yourself. When you buy a motherboard or any major part on Ebay, just make sure the guy has a solid gold rating. I'm totally pleased and impressed with what I got, but the guy I bought from totally dissapeared well over a year ago. He might have died, or hopefully he just retired to the Bahamas.
