As a few of ya know, I'm a poor basterd still stuck on dial up. When I live its my only option for internet. Anyway, we use the main phone line as the line to dial up on and miss alot of calls. I was wondering if anyone knew of a site where I can get a free call interupter? I checked out callwave and it seems pretty cool, but I was told not to pay for it because there is free ones out there. I've also googled this and I dont think "call interuptor" is the actual term for it, cuz I get some weird poop.So anyone know of any??

We had a little box thing before that would disconnect calls, but they seem to only work for like a month and then go to poop. We went threw 3 of them in a little over 3 months and for $50 a pop, it just aint worth it.

So if ya guys could help a poor dial up basterd out, and point me in the right direction, Id appriciate it. Thanks fellas.

I'm really not trying to rub it in. Honest.
Have you checked on cable? I had dial-up and was paying $25 a month. For $30 I have cable. Not as fast as some, but 10 times as fast as what I had. I think I'm getting around 425? compared to about 23?

Where I'm located I can't get cable or Dsl. I live out in the country. (Well 4 miles out of town, but it isnt a option here yet) Also I live in a wooded area in a patch of Oak trees so sattelite isnt a option either. Trust me I've checked.. lol This dial up is slowly killing me..lol.

Heartbreak I have Call waiting/callerID and a v.92 modem. Is there something I have to enable or what?

Oh and at least since I've had msn for like 5 years, and stilla poor fiddlesticker on dial up, think they feel sorry for me and only charge me $11 a month. I sign in at 40-44kbps so it could be slower.. But still..pitty me..lol

Sorry Bro....
Didn't read all of the post.

As usual, I let my crocodile mouth overload my hummingbird ass. Didn't know your situation. I tend to forget... Sorry.

You'll need a Modem-On-Hold program; check your computer to see if it's installed. If not, dig thru your drivers' discs to see if you have a modem driver disc. If so, check on that cd. Chances are, you've got it somewhere. If not, I can zip-up a folder and shoot it to ya via email (provided your modem is an Agere Systems based modem).

If I am reading into the situation correctly, you would just need something that would either inform you or catch a call while you were online, as regular dial-up use all five phone wires, not just two. I am just making sure I have the facts before I go and blurt some crap out lol. I know that as a member of AOL (back when I was a member) they released a simple "call interCEptor" (read: not an interRUptor) that was downloadable. no wires or boxes needed.

Now that I am with SBC Global on T-3 the have basicly the same thing, for dial-up that is, in case we ever have difficulties using the satelite link. Either way, back to the issue. Check with your ISP, they may provide software for free that will suport what you need. Otherwise, if you simply need something to monitor constantly or to even give people the ability to leave a "voice mail" for you while you are online, this might help ~~> http://www.download.com/3120-20_4-0.html?tag=srch&nid=1&qt=call&tg=dl-20

Keep in mind, this is a program listed on www.download.com, a place I have become intimate friends with. Most of the programs here are free to try, fee to buy. there are, most likely, THOUSANDS of other places where you can get this kind of software, free, forever. if you use any kind of P2P or filesharing network you could probably easily find one in minutes.

Hope this helps you out man.

EDIT: the link I poosted takes you to a search for some reason. The page I was trying to link was for a program called "Advanced Call Center 5.7"

Ummm, not trying to start an argument here man, but how does dialup use five wires? Regular dialup (as well as DSL) uses only 2 wires/conductants.

The only way I can see a dialup jack having more than 4 pins (two line setup) is if someone has either a 6pin (3 lines) or an 8pin (Cat5E, networking) setup.

Otherwise, not a bad suggestion... However, the way the voicemail/call catcher programs work, is by call forwarding. The person calling gets forwarded off to the "interceptor"'s number (usually an 800 number), where they leave a message. The call-ee then gets an alert via the internet. This usually costs a monthly fee.

The Modem-On-Hold software utilizes call waiting/caller ID (which he already has) and costs nothing. It simply pops a little bubble up in the corner (something XP is fairly good at, lol). The way it works, is V.92 listens for that little 'boop' that call waiting does. It then works much the same way your standard call waiting/callerid phone does, in that it displays the ID. Along with an option to put the 'internet on hold'.

I've used it myself, and it works fairly decent.

Yes, I do believe that the software sends the caller to another number, without them knowing and records the mesage. Mine used to save the mesage to my AOL mailbox. And the ones that simply disply a bubble usually make you log off the net, and if you can do that in time to catch the call, all the more power to you, but i could never do it.

as for the phone wires, I knew Cable use two, had been told dial-up use them all. being as there are actualy six in the jack, four of witch are used, i assumed that dial-up utilized those four at least. i am no expert- Just trying to help.

No prob man, I wasn't tryin to start a fight over it. I've just never seen a 4+ wire modem :) all the modems' I've dealt with over the years have been 2 wires.

the callwave setup just forwards your calls to them and records the message.. do you have a cell phone?? all you have to do is setup call forward on busy to your cell.. no more misses calls.. i had call wave for a good bit till they tryed to make me pay for it.. but thats all it did was forward then call..

I was just looking for a thing that boots me off line when a phone call comes in. Ill check thru my back up cds and see if I can find something. Otherwise Ill check on Download.com. That place is good, I got my adware from there, and it works great.

you got call waiting?? if you got call waiting when it beeps it will kick you just make sure you dont have the nuber set to disable call waiting

i probably dont know what I'm talkin about but couldnt you jsut get 2 phone lines one for the net and one for the regular phone. sorry if I'm in left field but i know ppl who do that here, but i probably costs more, idk just a thought.

Fisherman has a point, that's what we did before we had internet cable,we had 2 lines setup because we were a business,so we had a line that was used for net and a line for calls, cost extra money but it was easier, that way you could be on the net 24/7,just another option,i think are extra line was less than $20 and you could use it for anything.

Yeah thats a option, but I know theres call interceptors for free on the net. (I honestly think my modem and Msn have one, but I gotta figure out how to activate it) I've just been patiently (Kinda) waiting for the Dsl or cable to make its way out to where I live. Didnt really wanna waste any more money sticking it in to hop up my dial up ya know?
