Due to fruadulent deals here on RCNT in the past, PLEASE be careful when purchasing items from members that you dont know.
Things to consider before sending money to strangers..

Post count on RCNT, Trader Feedback, location, working Email address, to name a few.

RCNitroTalk can not be responsible for deals gone bad, so we ask that you take the proper steps & precautions before closing a deal.
If anyone has a useful tip to add, please do so. We take our members safety very seriously..

Also, if you can, use paypal to protect your self against scammers.

I recommend only using PayPal or an escrow service with members you don't know.
I would also recommend getting a phone number and calling it more then once. Call a second time when the member isn't expecting your call.

Beware of first time or low post count users.

If you have a serious interest in purchasing an item from someone you don't know, or someone who is new to this forum, it would be well worth $4.00 to send them a REGISTERED letter describing the item you want to purchase and the selling price. Include their full name and mailing address, your full name and mailing address, their Email address and phone # in the correspondance and keep a copy of the letter sent. This will confirm their name and address, along with the details of the sale, should you need legal proof. Only then would it be safe to send a check or Money Order.
If you Email the seller of your intentions to verify the deal via registered mail, and he backs out, or never accepts the registered mail from you, you have only lost $4.00.
You MUST protect yourself when dealing with strangers.

I definitely recommend all of the above and also ask around. In the trader feedback, PM some of the mebers that did deals with that person. Ask how it went. The last thing we want is to find a member scammed.

but what if you dont have paypal ? like me and send a money order.... curtis

Then you take a larger risk of not being protected if you get riped off.

I think Ed proposed the best way of going through unknown members.

We are always looking to help others. I am currently trying to get an Unknown low post member selling high dollar items to work with me. If he does I can give him feedback to help out.

No Idea whether he is up to doing what I proposed but its up in the air.

Be careful on all transactions. Use paypal whenever dealing with cash. If they don't comply then move on UNLESS you want to take the risk. If so get as much info on the member. Work, Home, Addresses. Don't leave yourself open.

Remember what happened to Fridge. Kid never paid, his mother even promised to pay and then backed out. So even with a phone number, address, etc. it still is no means a guarantee the other party will follow through with their end of the deal. I would not only use PayPal but have funds drawn from a credit card to give you even more security.

Anyone hear of this?
I was told by a friend who's been doing e-bay deals since before paypal...he says if you send a Postal money order and it's written in that persons name and had their address on it and they cash it....if you file a fraud charge against them through the Post office, they can withhold the recipients mail until they pay the Post office the value of the MO plus penalty charges......now I'm not one to question the friend who told me this but I can't find any info on this on any website......I've known the guy for a while now and he's definately NOT the type to make poop up....does anyone else know anything about this safety net?????

huh? Fridge sent the kid the radio, which was to trade for a scooter. Kid said he could not ship the scooter so fridge asked for a few dollars and the kid just didnt send it. Mother even told me that her kid uses the radio so she is not returning it and does not have the money to pay...$17 was it?

motorcitybadboys screwed my buddy out of an LST, which are by no means cheap. If you don't have paypal, do not trade on the net.

I must agree on that one. I only bid on eBay items if the seller takes Paypal, and I think sending Payment via Paypal gives the seller some assurace. I'm new here, but that's all I'll use. Seller gets money instantly, and Paypal provides great protection against fraud. A+ in my book.

Paypal is not as safe as you think, I learned the hard way. I now make payments through paypal on a credit card only, unless I know/trust the seller. Your credit card should have fraud protection and thats the easiest way to get your money back. The only way paypal refunds money is if the seller has actual funds in his paypal account. If there is no money in his account you won't get poop.

I agree. Paypal is not as safe as you think. I got taken for $385 on a deal and I paid with paypal. I called paypal and they wouldn't refund my $ because it was not an ebay transaction. My understanding is you are only protected if it is an ebay transaction and if the seller has any $ left in his account.

Unfortunately, my paypal was linked to my checking account. I now have switched it to my credit card. Most credit card companies have fraud protection so you have a better chance of getting the charges reversed. I learned the hard way. Also, the a$$hole who took my money also took $2500 from another guy.

IMO the safest way to do stuff is by money orders. As soon as you drop anything into the mailbox, its because a federal issue. Money orders can be tracked easily also. Plus if its a Post office money order, thats even more federal. Thats the way I do all my deals. (Deliver confirmation kicks ass too. Them signing for it is a nail in the coffin if they try to screw you)
