Brushless Turns...

As I can't afford a Nitro (and won't be able to for a long while yet) I gotta make the best of what I've got. I'm eyeing up a Losi Xcelroin brushless combo for my Wheely King. Yes, I am going to toughen the drive train.

I wondered if anyone could clue me up on what the Turn ratings related to on that system. Are they the equivalent that set up is to Brushed turns or something different?

The systems I have available go from 3.5T to 13.5T ratings. It's for off road bashing and jumping, nothing competitive, just need a fist full of brushless power to have some fun with.

For the record, I picked the Xcelorin because the UK price is very good (a good 30% cheaper than a Castle or Traxxas set up) and it's as flexible as the Sidewinder pretty much. I really like the idea of being able to set it up via USB or a quick-programming card. Neat idea if you need to make a quick change.

Turn ratings on brushless systems really are a bit of a crock. The best proof of that is the 3.5 turn Novak system is supposedly around 10500kv, however the 2.5 turn Tekin, is ONLY 8500kv. Thats still good power but clearly the turn ratings are irrelevant.
The Losi Xcelorin system in the Speed T is I believe 4800kv, which would be the absolute most you would want in a WK.
The motor in the Firestorm Flux is a Flux Warp at 5700kv. Waaaaaay too much.
I reckon 3500-4000kv will work great in a WK, so that will ROUGHLY be about 9 or 10 turn....

I have a friend that runs a 4600 KV motor in his Wheely King on a 3s lipo with like 90/12 gear and it is a blast to bash.

So basically from what you are saying, from the Losi Xcelorin range, I want one of the two highest '10.5T' or '13.5T' turn ones.

The 10.5 in a WK will be a fun handfull. I'm guessing this is the one you started to hopup and if you managed to get a bit more weight on the nose then its all go. Lets face it, the W/K does what it's name suggests, with the useless brushed mill in it, so to make it driveable you need to keep the nose on the ground.
I'd leave the 13.5 because I think you can do better, but yeah, (rambling) go the 10.5.

It's chassis-reversed, long wheelbase and with shortened stiffer shocks, and EEM TVPs and STRC aluminium a lot of other stuff. It rides flat as a board and corners well on the stock motor, which is just no damned fun :)

I'm using 4500 NiMH stick packs deliberately too to keep the nose weighted down.

The Traxxas Velenion is a 10.5 turn motor Hyster, with a KV rating of 3500, but as I've said before it goes as hard as an 8.5 Novak at 5000kv, in fact faster.
Webbage if thats the case then 10T or so would be great.
Remembering the Velenion in the Stampede, Rustler and Bandit VXL can be made to do 60mph, (and thats NOT fiction)
A 10 or so turn mill with good basher gearing will make that WK a lot of fun.

I rigged it with a 19T Yokomo D1SP drift motor and a 15T ESC and it *flies*. If I can get a Brushless rig that improves on this and cuts out the maintenance then it'll be a sweet setup I think.

Current gearing is 24/90.

What's the big deal with the Velenion kit anyway. It's brutally expensive compared to the other 3 I looked at. Does it handle 4S LiPo or something??

Just so we can all have a moment to drool:

I just looked on A main and it was the second cheapest, only behind the Sidewinder at $20 less. I wouldn't call that brutally expensive, however since the Sidewinder is 3s capable that would be the system I'd choose.

I just found I can get a Sidewinder + 5700kv motor from HPI for less money than the Losi kit. Trouble is they *only* do 5700kv. It's all Castle gear rebadged. Would a 5700kv really rip my poor WK apart? I could stick a throttle limiter on it to limit it to like 80 or 90% throttle, or smooth it out using the excellent Sidewinder throttle curve setup.

Do higher KV motors generate less torque as they do in Brushed motors?

Dont limit it. Just limit you, and you should be ok. High KV motors produce lots of heat so I guess all power, no torque. Easy to gear down though, so it should be a good system.

Thanks for the gesture, but I can't import, I'll get nailed by customs. I can get a decent setup here from HPI that will do me for what I want. I don't import unless it's not available here at all.

According to Squirrelod (A guy on Youtube), the 4700kv are the fastest if used with a 4S LiPo because of the RPM.

Never gonna run 4S, I am only ever gonna run up to 3S at best, or 6-7cell NiMH. According to that logic the 5700 is actually the fastest option, and I am gonna have to fit heavy duty gears right through the truck. probably gonna need metal drivelines as well from front to back.
