Good as in replacement? A 35t is good for most purposes. There are nicer brushed motors and ESCs. But make em buy a Fusion SE 1200 kv. Its time to go brushless.

There are 540 and 550 sized brushed motors. Repairable and sealed.
55t was the OG crawl spec.
27t was the old school rock racer spec.
35t is the current spec in RTRs for brushed. There's a ballpark.

Lower turn - more rpm - more top speed
Higher turn - less rpm - less speed

Honestly what id do is just take a 21t titan out of a trx4 and just throw it in and send it. Or even better, a 12t 550 lol.
Me personally, I have very bad luck with Traxxas and Spektrum electronics. I tend to stick with HobbyWing, but, read on a few forums that for brushed motors, Holmes Hobbies are really good.

He absolutely refuses to spend the money for a brushless setup for anything he has. He says they are overpriced and not worth what you pay for them, and I am tired of arguing with him.

His truck came with a 17T, but, I've heard everything from 22T to 55T on various forums. I know literally nothing about crawlers.
Well a 20 dollar Amazon motor will do. Injora motors are generally pretty cheap. 27t will work. Even a 12t can work.
The cheapest step up in tech and quality from there is the Fusion SE 1200 kv. Would just look for a cheap 550 sized motor on amazon. It will be durable. Or just upgrade to the Fusion and it will then have the low speed ability and FOC the nice rigs.

FOC is field oriented control. Meaning the motor is suing software to maintain perfect low speed linear control. Which is good. Really desirable on a crawler. And lasts longer than brushed. Can get wet.

Oh, I know. I've been looking into the Fusion SE 1800KV for my Cen Sicario winter truck, after running a friend's TRX4 with that setup.

So you gotta get you a nice axial crawler. And you're going to get yourself a Fusion SE. And then you're gunna crawl together and you can flex on him and his lame brushed truck. Using shame to change his mind.

Buy the Holmes brushed are counterfeit if they're cheap on Amazon. A real Holmes crawler motor is not cheap. But they're legit. Integy used to also have Japanese made brushed motors from Japan with a little blue light on them. Also legit brushed. But cheap works.

I honestly have to ask, the water break in is still a thing? I haven't bought a new brushed motor in probably 5 years or so.
I still see that it is. I haven't personally tested this though. Some folks in the Micro - T/B crowd do it.

I'm just gonna put the Fusion SE in my Cen Sicario, and run his Gen8 over lol. Oh, wait, I can already do that with the stock brushed setup (ok, so it was technically an accident, but I ran over his truck with mine the other day).

He is analog. Gotta get him into the now. Before he becomes a peepaw

He already is a peepaw. It's why I just don't bother arguing with him anymore about anything. If his wife of more than 30 years can never change his mind, I don't stand a chance.

There is nothing wrong with running brushed, it just isn't cost effective when a fusion se is about $70 and a really nice Holmes is maybe $50.
If he wants brushed, then get a high-quality motor from Holmes Hobbies or just throw another cheap brushed motor at it and wait for it to fail.
