Well Bought a traxxas 3.3 motor 3 weeks ago broke in by the dvd instructions, ran pretty good never really messed with the needles. also have about a half gallon through it, well today went to play around the track and it was doing great alot of blue smoke and been running about 4.25 turns out on HSN, temps were about 240-250. well the car just stopped and i couldnt pull the pull start, took engine apart and bam the rod broke at the top, top of piston is dark brown and top of cooling head is slight brown color. sucks but hopefully get it fixed my traxxas never really had any problems of it overheating always ran about 2 tanks through it then let it cool down. but been reading around and says caused by it being lean... what causes it?

trx 3.3 motors have had a prob with braking rods in them. traxxas should fix it for you but when you get your new motor you may want to check out this rod

LOL^. What kind of fuel are you using? It's been a long time since I broke in a 3.3, but I've never had a broken rod. One thing I can tell you is that fuel with high oil content is bad news. You'll get plenty of smoke and heat, but the engine could actually be running lean. Fuel with 12 or even 11% oil is much better to use. By your description of the piston you must have been using fuel with a castor oil blend in it, which is good, but at the same time the total oil % is probably too high.

One other thing with 3.3 engines is they must be pre-heated when breaking them in. This loosens the fit of the piston and sleeve, keeping the rod from having to work so hard.

Engine.
It's an ENGINE unless it's electric.

Hey, I didn't write the dictionary, you're the only one here that's old enough to have done that. :D

It's really just a figure of speach. People TEND to call them electric motors and engines. I honestly think the dictionary should be changed, but there's alot of nascar guys blowin' motors in turn 3.

Funny thing is, I don't recall hearing about any electric engines.

Haha my bad it is a engine, i agree. I guess it was the first thing that came out when i was typing, but the fuel i was using was rich's brew 20% nitro and 12% oil cas/syn blend.

I didn't write it, but I was the original proofreader.

Actually, I had an electric engine for my Lionel trains. :D
