Most break-in proceedures are the same. Idle a whole tank slobbering rich. Then lean it up just enough so that it will move and stay running at 1/2 throttle for one tank. Then lean it up some more so that it will do the same at full throttle, do this for a tank or two. Then start leaning it up so that it goes faster on subsequent tanks. The idea is to get the heat up gradually so that the engine will de-stress itself and the parts will wear-in slowly. get a temp gun, radio shack has them for around $25 and it will help alot to have one. During breakin, never go above 230-240 degrees f. Once you get it leaned up to 240, you will have adequate power to have fun. Run it at this temp for about 4 or 5 tanks, then start leaning it up to 250 to 270 (do not go above 270). By the time you get to 270 you're broke in and it's putting out max power (without mods). Be sure to check the temps often during tanks. The old savage tanks had a bad habbit of leaning out at 1/2 tank, don't know about the new tanks. This is the proceedure I use, and it works for me. Other folks do it a bit different, but just about everyone will say to get a temp gun and follow the temp guidelines for break-in. Get it too hot too early, and you'll cook your engine.
As to your last question, it shouldn't have harmed your engine if you ran it for a short time (less than a full tank), just keep in mind the total ammount of gas that's been through it.
Hope that helped,
