Black Lab

My little Black Lab/Australian Shepard mix is very much Black Lab and I was just wondering when they start to calm down.

I was always told that they stop teething at about 2yrs and she did, she is 2yrs and 4 months, I was told they calm down at around 2 and she didnt she got more active. Then I was told labs calm down at 3 yrs,5yrs and never.

So you lab owners could you tell me when your labs started to mellow out. I know she is mixed and it will be different, but she has been a Lab in every aspect so far.

man I've never seen a calm lab i just got border collie and its a pita but i love the dog i missed having one for a couple years

every dog is going to be different. Exp if its a mixed one. My lab (was a purebred) calmed down after about a year year and a half. He was calm as hell until he saw the gun. Then he knew it was time to hunt..lol. He was a strictly outside dog, but was free to roam around the yard (I live in the country). Was smart as a whip. Never left the yard unless it was with someone.. Great dogs. But yeah, I hope he calms down a little bit for ya soon. Be sure to watch for his hips. Labs tend to get Hip displacia (Sp?), so if ya see signs, be sure to bring him in so they can treat it before it gets bad.

I have seen a lot of calm labs, I have never seen a calm Collie, Arnt they sheep herder dogs. Seem like they would have a lot of energy. Oh well every dog is different.

Well He is a She, But yeah We had her checked when she got fixed, I asked the vet straight up if he would check her to see if anything was up with her hips. I have seen too many labs be put down at young ages due to hip displacia. She was doing fine.

I think labs are to damn smart for their own good. Isis (my lab) Is really odd, she can drink through straws, Cherry Pepsi is her favorite she downed about half of my 44oz once, she takes $ and puts it into a pit in our backyard, and she has a pet cat.

Sounds more like a girlfriend than a dog, amigo. I'd be worried if the dog goes on a shopping spree. If you see a sequined dog dish, you better start hiding your wallet better.

In the past, my dogs calmed down after being fixed (spayed, neutered).
If your not going to breed the dog and haven't had it done yet, you might as well get it done.

I have a Black Lab Chow mix, she is now just about 5 and just starting to calm down now. She can still be a bit much at times, but for the most part, she is much better now.

Dont girls like Diet Pepsi.

She got fixed a little while ago (their are just to many pound puppies out their to breed her) didnt slow her down much exept for the first night we brought her home. 5 oh well, maybe I will tie one of her toys to my buggy and let her chase that for a while lol.

My chocolate lab is 9, he's still as f***ed up as the day I brought him home. And we worked with him a lot. My mother-in-law used to train labs and did some shows. Anyway, he did great with commands he just has never really settled down. Our black lab was terrible but then again she was a seizure dog and eventually had to put her down right around 2 years since meds never worked. It would be hard to judge an opinion on anything based on her. Every one my mother-in-law has had have been very well behaved dogs. As others said, it depends on the dog, it's bloodlines and how much you put into trainingwise, plus time spent

I have a lab/pitbull mix and he is almost 2 yrs old. I had him fixed at 6 months and he is still as wild and crazy as when he was a young pup. I have no hope that he will ever calm down especially being half pit.

LOL . . . I have a papered ligt golden retriever, which is basically the same dog as a lab. It's in their personality, Indy is 8 years old now and she's still hyper as day one, acts and plays like a puppy. If your dog won't calm down, you just need to get used to it and train her to mind you to control it. This requires a lot of time with the dog which most people don't have.

The worst about mine is she's a people dog. Very mindful until strangers come around and she just comes unglued, whining and running around them wanting pets and attention. It's embarrassing.

wow rocknbil our dogs must be related, my lab will be a great mellow pup, then when other animals come into her yard, or people knock on the door, My dog blows a head gasket. And yeah it is embarrasing. Al least dogs can't talk!

Everything I have heard from the guys I know who hunt with labs state it should be around age two, but that they seem to have boundless energy like a puppy for most of their lives. One of the reasons I went with a Golden. Mine, at 5 months, is pretty calm already, and both the Vet and the dog trainer have determined she is extremely dominant.

My Springer was a neurotic nightmare, though. Hopefully the Golden gets the idea of "stay" and "heel" better than the Springer. Hard to get quail and chukar if they are flushed well before you can even see that far. Damn, stinky Springer.
