Big Bore / Integy Shocks

I have been seriously considering an upgrade from stock shocks to the big bores. I don't do any high jumping, so I have a few questions.

1) Will I really notice a difference in handling? I currently run 40wt with the stock springs but have been thinking of 60wt with stiffer springs.
2) Will the RPM 2-stage pistons fit without modifications? I had to sand them down to fit the stock bodies.

Thanks Fellas. I plan on making the decision in the next few days. Gotta be ready for the RCNT Get-Together!!

**EDIT**
I have also been looking at a set of Associated shocks. Any better than the Traxxas Big Bores??

The big benefit of going this route isn't really in the handling. It is in the suspension being able to handle the big air better. If you do not really do alot of big air and hardcore bashing, then your gain will be from a better built shock and that is about it. It will add weight to your truck; so if you are a racer, this might be a bad thing. My question is what has caused you to look for a stronger set of shocks?

I run the Associated shocks. From what I have seen, they are about the same performance-wise as the Big Bores. The two sets have the same thing wrong with them...the springs that come with them are weak. If your Maxx is heavier than stock, get a better set of springs.

I run 60wt silicone and use Trinity Blue springs on the front four shocks and a mix of Trinity Blue and Black on the rear four shocks.

I can't answer the RPM question, no experience there.

Well Sky, I was led to believe that the suspension would be smoother with aluminum body shocks then plastic. The other reason was that I was planning on going to 60wt and heavier springs from 40wt and stock springs and I am not sure if the stock bodies will hold up. I do know how to build shocks properly so they do not have any rebound when compressed without a spring. Maybe I should just try it and see if the shocks hold up???

I have both the BB shocks and the Losi (Dynamite) All and all I prefer the Losi. They have a threaded body and IMO are much easier to maintain.

If you are popping caps on the stock and want to upgrade thats great. Unless you are really in tune and @ one with your truck most people wont notice a difference in the shock body performance.

As Sky mentioned above you will get performance from the oil and springs you chose.

You can play around with the RPM but they are designed for jumping.

I've heard people making the stockers handle the heavier weight oil/silicone by using different pistons, but I think you'll be happier with the aluminum shocks. Then you can cram whatever you want inside and the worst you can expect is the oil/silicone to leak past the o-rings.

If you build the shock so that it does not rebound when fully compressed, then you have overbled the cylinder. But that is not necessarily a bad thing. You should get at least a half an inch of rebound out of a properly filled cylinder upon full compression.

As for the smoother ride, that might be true. I trashed my stock shocks way early on and didn't have much time for comparison. Went straight to all aluminum shocks and never looked back. Were I you, I'd get the aluminum shocks and not sweat the weight come race day.

Thanks guys. I think I may just get a set of AL shocks.

FastEddy - how much did the Losi shocks set you back? Tower dosen't stock them so I can't get a price comparison.

Sky - thanks for the shock building tip. I guess that is why I haven't blown a cap yet!!

Darth, I am also using the Dynamite/Losi shocks. They are great shocks but the springs that come with them suck. I am using these with 60wt silicone shock oil, and trinity blue springs on all 8, imo it handles great. If you do go with these, use the stock lower spring retainers from the stock shocks, they are slightly larger in diameter and will hold the springs much better. I paid $79 for mine but that was nearly a year ago, I have seen them cheaper recently.

If you do end up going with the Traxxas big bores, I am not sure what the best price you have found then for, but the best I have seen them is at Stormer.

Now the question is, do I get the purple or silver bodies???

Has anyone used the Integy MSR4 shocks???

**Edit**
OK fellas, after doing a search on RCNT, I decided to bid on a set of Integy MSR4 silver body shocks on ebay that nobody bid on, current price $50. Wish me luck!! Auction ends in 11 hours!!

Check em out

Yep, thats them. I have the blue ones though.

I don't know much about the integy shocks, sorry I can't help you out there, but good luck anyway.

Ok, I will be getting a set of Integy MSR4 shocks in the next week or so ($58 on ebay).

I'll do a review on them seeing as there is not a lot of info on them.
