i purchased a SaVage .25 rtr this Nov. and just finished breaking it in and have ran almost a gallon of fuel through it when i noticed my engine after accelerating it that it would kinda wind down rather then going straight to neutral when i let off the throttle so i shut her down and came to read up on the forum.. I read a post on a Forum about the Backplate on some SaVage's coming loose and needing the screws to be locktied down.. So after close inspection i did see that the rotostart and backplate were loose THE CATCH ! MyBox had a RED X ON IT !! I didnt know what the RED X was about till just today or the Backplate issue till it was too late !!! So i followed the instructions, applyed locktite and tightened it up and i am gonna put the engine back in and give her a go.. Dont understand why it was loose considering my box had a RED X on it Has ANYONE had the same problem ??? and if the Engine is Damaged will HPI REPLACE it for me ??? I'm Affraid it may be damaged or dirt may have gotten in cause the oil coming out the exaust was kinda dark and not the color of fuel residue OR COULD IT BEEN CAUSE THE AMOUNT OF AIR COMING INTO THE ENGINE AND NOT DIRT? caused the dark oil drip outta the engine? SHOULD I TRY AND START HER UP AGAIN? I'm scared :( looked again and after pulling the backplate completely off it looked clean inside
... what was the dark oily release coming out the stinger?
ANY FEEDBACK WOULD BE APPRECIATED :)

hey,
I have had my backplate come loose on my .21 savage. I ran it for about 5 minutes with it loose. When i took out the engine, there was a black grease goo everywhere. I cleaned out all inside with nitro fuel and SLOWLEY turned the piston with the glow plug out. I watched from the glowplug hole to make sure no dirt was on top of the piston. I started her and she ran strong still. I do not think that HPI will replace the engine or that they should....Its your responsibilty to double check thier screws...not yours. THe problem has been known to. I would have expected u to check it regardless if there was an X on it or not.

I'm a Noob and new to the hobby but i do think its HPI's responsibility if my engine is toast

Sunny, I would call HPI and explain what you just told us. I'm sure they will bend over backwards (new engine I'm sure) to make sure that you're happy.

This may sound a little pesimistic, but a "red x" is easy to fordge. A hobby shop, for example, could just take a red marker and put an X on there so the truck sells faster. Online hobby shops may do that quicker than the local guys. It could also be the distributer... "I have 30 Savage 25 trucks that I can't sell because they don't have a red X... well I'll fix that...."

For anyone reading this, do youself a favor and take the truck apart and check for yourself. A seasoned RC hobbist would take the whole truck apart down to the screws and diff parts and put it all back together.

That's the only way to know for 100% that your new ride is "ready to run".

actually you can have your engine replaced by HPI... just call them up and send them your engine with a copy of your reciept... I know that my LHS call them up and HPI was going to take care of them... they have good warrenty and stand behind their products.. tell them you situation..

I did do as u said funwheels1 and checked inside for dirt and it looked fine and i am going try and start truck soon ill let ya know what happens :)

Thx for the feedback RobH I'm gonna try and contact HPI to find out :)

THX FELLAS !

[]-[]ooah thats Great news TRD thx :)

Hey Sunny D, sorry to hear you are having probs with the new ride so soon, but infact the 3 screws that hold the roto start to the back plate on my Savage 25 vibrated out, and my box also had a red x on the bottom of it, however the back plate screws themselves have been loc tited, since you can see a bit of red loc tite that has seeped around the heads of the screws.........make sure no damge is done to your engine first, and if you are not happy with it call HPI and explain to them whats going on and they will do whatever it takes to correct the problem, they are very curtious and are willing to take care of your needs, just be patient when you call the hotline, sometimes it can take up to 15 minutes to get thru to customer service. Best of luck to you, hope it turns out in your favor

Yeah I am with funwheels a little bit on this. This is the problem with RTR's. Everyone thinks that you can just take it out of the box and you are good to to. However it is HPI's error for not putting it together properly as well. RC Car action always suggests that you take the RTR and check all of the screws for tightness because after all it was a human that put it together and we all do make errors. Later

have yet to call em, waiting on a friend to hook me up with a dude that knows savage's well and see what he has to say . if that takes to long I'm going to the lhs to ask them to have a look @ it :)

Let us know how it turns out, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you, hope it's nothing serious.

RTR means ready to run no? well for some noobs that are just getting into the hobby and are not upto date with all the news and may not have internet and dont know about the troubles with RTR as the expericed Racer, maybe he's the only one with an rc out of his friends in his area ... on that note human error or not the manufacturer is liable for any problems ppl may incounter regarding an error made @ the factory ..
i ran almost a gallon of fuel through it and wanted to get to know the truck b4 i had start to fix something that i didnt break
