Just curious what you guys think... I did a search and couldn't find the
answer to this question...
What 10th scale body gives the greatest amount of down-force ?

The track setup has a lot to do with confguration. Also, ROAR legal or outlaw? If it's outlaw, a Lola body is the best. ROAR legal depends on the layout of the track.

Stratus 3.0 is apparenty the down force body of choice.
Diver is correct about the lola body, and only used for outlaw races as he stated.

Wouldn't the Lola apply all the downforce to the rear on a touring car?

Anyways, the Stratus works for me, other popular bodies are the Mazda.

stratus 3.0 has plenty of downforce but it's loose in the turns. CTS-V has very agressive steering but at the expense of speed down the straight. parma alpha and mazda 6 have a nice balance of steering and straight speed.

If all the down force was put to the rear of a Lola body then i would not have any steering. The wedge design gives very agressive steering and straight line stability. The gurney strip, when adjusted correctly will also give more stability.

This is why that body was so widely used in the Can-Am races in the 60's and 70's.

I have used the stratus 3.1 and was not impressed by it. As sl0eg1n stated, it makes the rear loose in a sweeping turn and has to be compensated with rear camber and toe. The CTS-V body is my favorite for a technical track. Steering is excellent but it sacrifices some straight line speed.

Alpha body was used by sl0e1n for many races and it gave the best mix of applied down force. The mazda 6 is a little bit more aggressive than the alpha body but also a popular choice.

Some bodies that I have seen used with moderate grip and downforce are the vauxhall astra, 300M, accord and Mercedes CLK-GTR bodies.

Interesting, stratus 3.0 is used by 99% of all 1/10th oval racers indoor and out.
Its my belief that you need to just like any other component, tune the body to preform as you need it to.

Has anyone ever done wind-tunnel tests on RC cars ?
I'm curious if there's anything that can be done to the undercarriage
of the car to improve aerodynamics ?

I cut the ass of the car out.
Under the trunk line from tail light to tail light.

It lets the trapped air flow better so it's not like running with an air brake.

Ahhh. Cool, gonna have to cut my bodys out tonight.

Definately don't want no brakes, they just slow you down.......:)

What about gluing a hard plastic sheet under the chassis cut to the edge
of the body shape leaving only the flywheel hole open ?
Would this smooth the airflow under the car ?

I have used the Stratus 3.1 body as well. Not too bad, but my personal preferrence is the Nemesis body. Sits a little lower (i.e hood, roof, rear of body) than the stratus, and I feel the handling dynamics is better with this body.

Honestly, without using CFD (Compressed Fluid Dynamics) modeling or wind tunnel testing, we really can't say which has the best aerodynamics of these bodies...usually, its by word of mouth. If the majority of the racers prefer the Stratus body, then usually the majority of the customers out there will use that specific body. Too bad I don't work for NASA Ames anymore. Ames has the worlds largest wind tunnel, but its closed now due to budget cutbacks. Practically all their wind tunnels are shut down. It would have been nice if I was exposed to this hobby earlier. I would have performed the wind tunnel tests myself.

If the companies (i.e protoform) would give the aerodyamic properties (Lift, Drag, etc) then we'd all know which body performs the best.

Dude, did you not read the post right before yours? Well here, let me help you out...

opps srry didn't see it, was to excited about getting a new body i didn't pay atten. thanks.

A good move to let the air exit free,as air under the car and entering the winshield opening to cool the engine causes turbulence and brakes the car at high speed.
