Battery Lag?

Ok, I have a rc18mt with a mamba comp brushless set up. I'm runing 1 LRP 1200 and 1 epic which is a 1300 i belive. I'm also runing deans plugs on the battery packs. My question is, when I give it gas off a dead start, it slowly takes off, then seems to get a power band and spins out. It rolls slow before taking off like a bad out of heck, for about 3 feet. I was wondering if it could be the fact that I'm not runing lipos that its laggin or something. Also anyone know of a cheap lipo battery and charger that will fit the rc18, that wont break the bank. It just dosent seem normal to have the lag that it does. Any help is usefull.

Set the start up power to low on the ESC and set the timing to normal. Also make sure the battery type is set to nimh with the LVC disabled.

Apogee makes great lipos and are a direct fit in the RC18T. If you do pick up lipos remember to set the LVC.

That battery is sweet, may have to get one of those. But do you know of any cheapy chargers. The guys at my hobby shop were trying to sell me a power converter and a expensive charger that would have been like 250 bucks. The timing on the motor is stock though i dont know how it would have changed, but the settings on the speed controller might be off. Ill have to check that when I get home from school. A couple very nice multi-chargers that will charge lipos, nimh, nicads, and pb:

Hyperion EOS5i dp is a very nice charger that runs about $100. It will require a separate power supply if you don't have one already. It is extremely easy to use.

The MRC Superbrain 989 is another popular charger and comes with it's own power supply.

I would suggest not going the cheap route when it comes to using lipos and their chargers. It is wiser to buy better gear and have the peace of mind that your equipment will not fail.

That first one sounds good. But I'm not quite shure what a power supply does. Thats what confused me at first.

Many of the higher end chargers will require a separate power supply which basically converts the 110 AC power from your home to DC and decreases the voltage to 12-14 volts. Depending on the model, you can get power supplies that output as little as 1 amp or as much as 30 amps or more.

For charging small packs such as the Apogee listed below which is in the 1500mah range, the charger will require 1.5 amps minimum (3.0 amps for Apogee packs since they can be charged at 2C) with an additional 1-5 amps overhead for auxiliary functions such as the LCD screen, backlight, charging circuitry etc. As the capacity of the pack increases, so does the current requirement of the power supply. Most people use a 15-20 amp power supply. Some folks run higher rated supplies if they have the need to run additional devices such as tire lathes, cooling fans, dischargers, 2nd charger etc.

It is OK to go overboard when choosing a power supply, higher amps is better.

I agree with SweetDiesel on the Super Brain. I have that one, and it's basically a no brainer. If you don't want to make the settings, it will read the cells and do it all for you. It runs on 110 into a power supply and 12V into the charger, or connects in the car at 12V. $119.
It does all the batteries, and you can set it for 2 different ones, or charge one, discharge another, at the same time.
There's a reason it's called Super Brain.

I'm getting ready to jump into my first electric rig and after a bunch of research I'm getting a 989 myself because it looks pretty easy to use but seems like it'll do everything I'll ever need too.

I will have to give a third motion on the SuperBrain. I have one it does work great. I have never had a problem with it. I would have rather had the ICE but just could not find a power supply for a decent price.

I have the 989 and it is a solid performer and can charge almost anything on the market battery-wise. It also has a thermal sensor so the batteries don't heat up as much while charging.
