Well I went to the lake today in search of a monster. I catch several over 10 lbs out of this lake every year, and this is the time of year for some monsters. I lost one probably close to 14 at the boatside today...but I did manage to get this one. 7lbs 14 1/2oz. Not huge, but a nice fish anyhow.

Nice catch!
Nothing like the feel of a hog on the end of the rod, NOTHING.
Great to see that you C&R. I'm all for that. We have a few Honey Holes at the lake I go to. When you get tired of pulling in the 1-5 lbers we go hit them up. A few times a year I pull a nice one out like that. 12 lb is the largest yet.

Glad to see someone is catching. I need to go get the boat out of storage and head up. You just inspired me.

Me and my buddy just snuck into another lake on sunday and i got 6 toped by a 4.5 and he got 4 toped by a 4. It's just that time a year I guess. Noting beats a good day on the lake, Period. Nice fish man.

Holy crap.. The state record here in Mn. is like 7lbs. I caught a 5lber a couple years ago and I thought that was a monster.

Nice Catch my friend. I have only been large mouth bass fishing once and was not able to set the hook with the only strike I have ever had. I have however caught quite a few stripped bass in my day. There is nothing like rock fishing on the Chesapeake Bay.

Thanks for posting these pics... that must have been a blast out there.

Well I was out again...and missed 3 huge fish at the boat.....not good...am trying to get a photo pf one over 10, and preferably one over 12.

Nice Fish!!!!! You have stumbled upon my PRIMARY Hobby from Spring through fall. I fish around 20 - 25 Bass tournaments a year with some success. I will start fishing for "toothy critters: here in about 3 weeks. These would be Muskies. When it comes down to it, I fish tournaments to enjoy "competition" and feel that rush that I enjoyed so much during my youth participating in Sports...beyond that, I just love to take off and just "go fishing". Congrats on the nice fish, I am slightly jealous as our water is still pretty "hard" around here!!!! By the way what did you catch her on?

Hawk

Hawk,

I caught her on a junebug fluke, which is what I fish at this lake 90% of the time. I akso occasionally fish a junebug trick or fliptail worm, but only on the rare ocasions that they are sluggish. They are usually pretty willing biters. Water temp is about 67-70*f right now and the bite is amazing.

Something else I use occasionally is a buzz bait in black...nothing beats the rush of a huge swirl and the feel of the rod being tugged from your grip!

Recon,

From the sound of the water temps they may be on or coming off of "spawn"? I like to rig a fluke weightless and work it through Lillypads and over grass mats....It is an awsome bait. I primarily use the "white" and "bone" colors up this way. I will throw worms in junebug with alot of success. When I get a chance I will post a couple of pics from last year....A couple of hefty Lake Erie Smallmouth....Anyway, a couple more weeks and I will have my boat out of storage....I really envy you California guys...Those lakes out there have the world record swimming around in it!!!! It was caught last year. It was not certified due to being foul hooked. It was caught in 12-18 feet of water, so I doubt the fella "snagged" it on purpose...
Good Fishing and Tight Lines,

I'm so tired of hearing about that damn fish Hawk. Every time i pick up a news paper and look at the sport section or a fishing paper I see a article on this fish. The new issue of bass masters even has a write up on it. In my oppion he snaged it he should get over it, poop happens. But now hes thinking about submitting it to the records IGFA or what ever it is. I dont know but if it passes i know George Perry is going to turn over in his grave. On another note bass should be moving on there beads soon out here in Cali because we have been having 80-90 degree days. I'm going to go try this lake I know about tonight or tomarrow depending if my friend goes with me. Last time i was in there at night a pack of cyotteys ran by me and i just about jumped in the lake.

Bryson,

I doubt if they certify it. I am sure if you fish and you are from California, you are tired of hearing about that fish. What I love about the whole story is that the fish actually exists and has been seen!!!! I am sure there are bigger...In CA or maybe even Mexico!!! Worry not my friend, the yotes would scare the crap outta me too....LOL.

Have fun,

Hawk

I just can't wait till the bass move on there beads. I'm hopeing to top last years 8 pounder. I would like to get a nice fish over 10. This weekend I might head out to paris just to try my luck there ill float tube it and sight fish tube for the big ones. But ya it is kinda cool knowing that there is a bigger fish than the world record out there somewhere to be caught. Maby some day lol. I'm hopeing ot get a boat right after i get a truck that will add to my chances of geting a big one hopefully. I'm tired of walking the shore lol.

Heres a free tip....Tie a drop shot rig with a 3 inch senko on the money end...Green Pumpkin or Watermelon works well.....Instead of a sinker, tie on a lead head jig with a 4 inch finesse worm attached...Make it weedless and use that as your weight....Cast beyond the target...and drag it toward it...When you get into the sweet spot...gently shake the rig...and HANG ON. Best of luck to you....

TH,

I used to fish the grand river alot and the st joe in MI. Huge smallies are fantastic, I've caught a few. Ever catch them on the feed? I have used a firetiger stick bait and actually caught 2 over 4 lbs on the same bait on the same cast! Ill have to dig out those pics and someothers of my smallie days!

I fish the lake here at the house every morning, its my therapy. Here are a few pics from yesterday 03/13/07.

Holy Crap Guys,

Those are some very nice fish!!!!!!!! Those two smallies were part of a 5 fish limit in a large local circuit from Akron, Ohio. The 5 fish limit weighed 22.82 pounds. We ended up with 2nd place...we lost by .04. 22.86 won it....Was a nice payday none the less...Plus they all lived to swim another day!!!

Man, you guys are killing me with these pictures...I hope the lakes thaw soon, I hear my boat "a callin me"....

Hawk

Hawk in the pic of me with the 2 big fish, the one where you see my face, if you look behind me there is a weedline. Thats where I get um. What you dont see is that my boat is tied to the dock, I never untied it, just sat in it. Still using the junebug fluke, and alot of casting, but the result was nice, and the best part....no lost fish today....I boated everything I hooked. I fish about the first 2 hours of sunup...then I am done...just gets to damn hot.

Recon,

A funny thing is, I go to a lake and camp a couple of times a year. In better safer days you could leave your boat banked overnight. Anyway, I would get into my boat, walk to the back of it, (while still beached), and cast a buzzbait over a grassbed....2 nice LMB later, I would pack up and head out on to the lake. It took no more than 3-4 casts to catch them...Very Cool way to start the day. This happened everyday for the 4 days of my trip.
Anyway, Thanks a million for this thread guys....I am really missing the water right now, and its great to know that at least somebody is getting out. I am really looking forward to this season!!!
Tight Lines and Smooth Drags...
