I just got my 3.3 T-maxx and right after finishing up my 5th break-in tank, it started to die. As it was dying this nasty sounding grind seemed to be coming from the motor. The grinding noise grew as the motor died down and you can some what hear it when it runs, I hope i didnt trash it after getting it broke it. This is my 2nd TRX 3.3, and i havent had a single problem with the first. I'm afraid to start it anymore and cause more damage.

best thing to do is investigate.. i would start off by making sure there are no shavings on the piston.. just pull the head off and take a look. if there isnt any shavings there, then you are probably ok. Are you sure it isnt more of a dinging sound? sometimes if the idle is a little high the clutch shoes will rub the clutch bell a little and make a little noise

pretty sure its not the clutch, it would die down with the idle an not speed up? at one time i swore i could almost hear it through the exhaust. i removed the glow plug and the piston head looked clean. how do i go about removing the head? any special directions of removal/putting it back on, or just take it off?

wouldnt that void my warranty also?

one more thought. could it be the one way bearing in the ez start? if it even has one, maybe I'm only hearing it as its slowing down and the bearing is shot and becomes unbalanced right before the motor dies?

hm, well I'm sort of at a loss for the grinding sounf other than that.. but to take off the head you need to take off the plastic head protector, which has hex screws, and then you will see openings that go all the way down through the head. there are also hex screws in there. should be five of them. you take those out and the head comes off. when you remover the head, there is a washer in there.. its either copper or brass.. make sure you dont lose that because that makes a tight seal for compression. Best thing to do if you find anything in there is to just put it back together and call traxxas, if you have a warranty on the engine. I dont think taking the head off will void it.. but i wouldnt flat out tell them you took the head off anyway

bad news, took the head off and the piston and sleeve seem to be shot. this also must have ruined the crank because at T.D.C. it hangs on a flat spot and will stick there. pretty much NO COMPRESSION at all :(

calling traxxas tomorrow
