Went to run the Savage on Saturday, got it to the end of my driveway, when it decided to take off at WOT and hit a curb at full speed. Wonderful!!! The truck flipped luckily but the engin was at WOT for about 10 seconds while I was running after it. Shut it down, brought it in. Only thing I broke was the left front upright, so I replaced it and fired the truck back up.

Now it seems to run fine, but it feels like it shifts very quickly into 2nd, and once I get to 2nd, it seems like it wants to over-rev (if I go above half throttle, you can hear the engine winding out, like past the normal RPM range it should be at). If I putt around my yard and/or dont go over 1/2 throttle, it runs fine.

My question is what the problem could be. I was thinking clutch slippage originally, but the fact that it shifts into 2nd quickly scares me. I think the engine itself is still fine, I have plenty of compression on it when its cold, I can still lift the truck up by the pull start. I took the cb off last night, and the round part of my clutch shoes (3 shoe clutch) are shiny, but I'm not sure how I could know if they were slipping or not (I tried taking the temp of the cb after the run, but its hard to get to in a Savage). The drivetrain spins freely, so I dont know if it could be the tranny or not (I figure something would have broken inside, and/or I wouldnt be able to drive it very well at any amount of throttle input).

Sorta confused right now, so hopefully everyone has some better ideas than I do :)

Thanks!!!

Once the clutch is engaged if is not slipping then there is no way the engine can rev up without moving the savage. So, I think you have some clutch slippage somewhere. Double check to be sure your slipper clutch is tightend enough. If it still is over revving, take your clutch shoes off and scrape them up a bit with sandpaper. This should help to get rid of some slippage.

The slipper clutch is tight, tigher than it should be (hooked up to a Mach 26, if I tighten it all the way and then back off 1/8 or 1/4 turn, the nut just seems to spin off after a little bit, so I leave it tightened all the way).

I agree its most likely the clutch, but why would it only happen in 2nd gear? The engine seems to be at normal revs off the line, and if I'm just bashing around in the yard. But once it gets to 2nd gear if I try to give it full throttle, it winds up like crazy. The truck still moves forward (I havent let it wind up long enough to see if its actually gaining speed though, which would show me if its slipping or not).

Would anything in the tranny cause this? Perhaps something shifted during the impact? I'm not sure, I figure the thing wouldnt work at all if something was broken inside and I dont feel any binding when I spin the slipper.
