Years ago, there was Lap Monitor. Amain still sells it. It's about $100 and transponders are about $37. There used to be a popular and very inexpensive phone app called Laptrax that seemed pretty good, but I couldn't find it on the App Store.

What's out there? My searching does't come up with much... more DIY projects than anything.

I was looking around for a bit. Haven't found anything low cost yet. The ezlap system like they use for mini z racing was the last thing I saw that could work. Claims indoor outdoor. The local hobby shop said they aren't responsive enough for the faster 10th scale cars so they use the mylaps system for that which is $$$$. Am gonna be watching this to see if anyone has some other suggestions too.

I've been looking into lapmonitor as well.
seems to be the best solution for portable / backyard set ups.
Also researched trackmate whicj uses an overhead IR and is slightly more.

Leaning towards lapmonitor

Lapmonitor always had solid reviews. The only thing that keeps me from ordering it is it's about ten years old and I thought there'd be something newer and improved, and maybe cheaper by now. Maybe there's not...

I found another lap timer that sells for $40. It will only work with one vehicle at a time and you have to provide a speaker if you want to hear each lap time announced. Otherwise, it beeps to indicate it has sensed the car passing and you can review the data on its screen when you're done running.

Zeppin Voice Lap w/transponder. There are a few video reviews on YouTube. Total with tax and shipping was $50. This does what I want it to do and is about one third the cost of the Lap Monitor brand unit and one transponder. I'll update this thread with a review when it arrives.

Anyone have experience with Easylap or Trackmate?

Have delusions of starting a parking lot racing league here and dont think Lapmonitor will cut it

Did you guys see this post?

Seems like it might be worth a shot. Its nice that you can contact the developer directly if you have questions or problems.

Open source if you are one of those digitalmatical types of ppl too. 😎👍😁

Gonna see if I can figure this out. Looks free....already interesting, lol

For about the same price as a transponder for other systems, you can get the complete Zeppin Voice Lap set-up. It works very well, but isn't well suited for racing with others.

You can get multiple transponders (only $12 each) and bind them to the receiver/recorder, but they're all on the same channel... great for outfitting different vehicles you want to time one-at-a-time, but useless for timing multiple vehicles at once.

In a multi-competitor racing scenario, each racer would have to have his own Voice Lap Rx/Tx and lap times would have to be compared manually at the completion of the race. Workable, but not at all convenient.

The device works by picking up an IR beam from the transponder. There are dual emitters on the full-size transponder and they offer a Mini-Z size transponder with a single emitter.

They claim the emitter can work through Lexan bodies but I've read of mixed results. My dual-emitter transponder easily shoots through the front wheel well of my Rival MT10. You have to pick one direction; if I run the car the other direction around the track, I have to aim the transponder out the appropriate side or move the receiver/recorder to the other side of the track. I haven't tried it through Lexan. It has worked perfectly so far.

I have the transponder Velcro'd to the top of the MT10 receiver box. It plugs into the receiver for power and has an on-off switch on it.

Edit to add: To clarify, the receiver has several channels and you bind the emitter to the receiver's current channel. That allows you to operate several Voice Lap systems at one time.
