radio system?

I was wondering if I could use a traxxas radio & reciever with and HPI throttle servo? would it work with an HPI steering servo too?

servos are pretty much universal. Just the pin out of the pins that go into the receiver. You may have to swap 2 wires, but that's about it. Maybe even then ends. You can go to a LHS and get the right connector ends for the traxxas receiver and put it on the savage servo.

I think I get it....you mean I will maybe need totally new wires?

Not really new wires. You can get a really small flat screwdriver like ones that you fix glasses with. On one side of the connector, you can push in and up(towards the actual receiver) and the wire comes out. Pop all those out and then get the right end to fit in the traxxas receiver and you'll be good to go. Basic colors are red, black, and white.
