Hey Guys, it has been a while since I've done anything related to nitro r/c cars. I got a savage x 4.6 about 3 years ago and ran it hard for a year and then pretty much put it down and forgot about it, but after going into the garage and remembering how much fun it was I had to get it back up and running, so I took it to my local shop and he told me I had almost no compression in my engine and my engine had pretty much been burnt out so I got a brand new engine installed and began to break it in today...

Breaking it in gets me really nervous because I don't want to hurt my engines life from the start but hopefully I've done okay so far. When I put the first tank through it I had a little trouble getting it started (This is while it was idling on a box). At first I could only get it started for a second and when I would remove rotostart and glow plug it would shut off and eventually I got it running for a little longer but I had to just give it a little jolt of gas to get the engine running (hopefully that is OK, I couldn't get the engine to turn over without it) and then it would run longer and I let it burn through a tank...My only 2 concerns are that it was

1) Dripping a little brownish/red liquid out of the exhaust onto a towel I put under it. I can't remember if that was okay or not. Does that mean I need to lean out the fuel a little bit because it was getting to much??
2) I was letting the car idle without giving it any gas, but the wheels were still spinning considerably fast (maybe like 7-10mph) which just seems way too fast. I would tap the brakes every few seconds to keep them slowed down and I had the idle trim turned down on my transmitter...I don't think it's supposed to idle like this so do I need to turn down one of the screws on the engine (I was never good at tuning my car so I don't really know all this stuff).

Again, It's been a while since I've done anything with my truck, and even then I wasn't very good with all the technical stuff. I just enjoyed going out and bashing with it...But this go around (with a new $200 engine) I actually want to actually take good care of it and make it last longer. I never really knew how to tune it and maintenance it past a certain extent...So if any of you guys can help me with my breaking in process question, or have any further advice on break ins I'd appreciate it...also If you have any tips on tuning and what kind of things I can do to keep my engine healthy and running longer It would be greatly appreciated also.

Thanks!:D

No man your good so far! It's normal for it spit the nasty stuff out of the exhaust and it's ok if the wheels are spinning. The important thing is to monitor the temps according to the engine manual. I would suggest getting a temperature gun. They are very helpful in the break in and tuning process.

Okay thanks guys...Yeah I think not having a temp. gun was one of my biggest mistakes when I was running my truck a couple years ago. I never really knew how hot it was so I couldn't tune it properly but I already had one ordered and it should be in the mail in a day or two...And before I start the next two tanks of the break in, I'll fix the idle screw so that the wheels are spinning!

Just take your time and temp the engine regularily. I did the samething with my savage xl and it came out pretty well. I did have to lean my high speed needle some to get through break in but that's all the troubles I had. Also use after run oil to prevent corrosion and lube it for the next run, and keep your air filter clean.

Okay, I finished up the other two tanks of my break-in this afternoon and they went by pretty smoothly...A few more questions though:

1) I had a few times where the engine would stall if I didn't give it gas while it was warming up which I think is kinda normal, but then I had a few times where it would also stall if I gave it too much gas at once, but it eventually seemed to warm up and run smoother...If it stalls when you give it gas, what does this mean?

2) Also, My brakes seem almost shot, even after I tightened up that spring on the side. It's pretty much impossible for me to stop it if it's going fast. The guy at the store said there was something else you can tighten up/fix that will put the breaks back to how they should be. Where is this?

Oh, and I fixed my idling problem, now the wheels turn very slowly when idling...And I should have a temp. gun coming in the mail in the next few days which will help me make sure its tuned properly

Well Iwould say you need to start leaning out the high speed needle. That should fix you stalling problem. It's too rich.
