i know there are some troops on here and i was wonderin if they could help me. i went and took the practice asvab. i scored a 50 and the airforce recruiter told me i would score higher on the real asvab. is this true?
 
depends how they administer it. For us it was just in a massive group piled into one room in high school. It was loud and they timed everything rather short.
These were my scores.
SCORE: GT: 123 MM: 120 CL: 113 EL: 117

I'm not sure how they compare but it was a pretty crappy way to have a test. elbow to elbow and little time to do anything at all.
 
Been so long ago that I can not remember my actual ASVAB scores. I DO remember Sgt. Anderson (my recruiter) putting my Pre-ASVAB up on the bulletin board behind his desk for all to see. He said that was the only 100% he had ever seen.

If it were me I would bone-up on the parts I didn't do so well on. The ASVAB can be a little daunting.

what year did you take yours? I bet the military was still paying cash on the barrel at the time. :p:
 
Oh snap! I knew that was coming. Yeah, I took the ASVAB at the ripe old are of 16--the last year that the Army allowed 16 year olds to enlist. Dropped outta high school, got my GED and was a PFC before my 17th BDay. That was way back in 1986...
 
i went yesterday and took the computer administered practice asvab and the recruiter said i did good not to have studied. he said they can almost promise me my welding career. they gave me 12 minutes for 14 algebraic questions!! the recruiter said that i would probably get 2 or 3 points higher on the real thing. my school doesn't give the asvab so i have to goto the recruiter.
i am 17 and i graduate this june so i will probably enlist in june!
 
Good luck on the text. I scored high enough to get my choice of MOS. Wanted to go electrical engineering and somehow ended up in an Air Defense Battalion. You are wise to choose the Air Force. That or the Navy are the way to go today. Better training and better real-world opportunities out of the service.

same here. after i took it i asked him what i could do and he handed me the mos list and said take your pick. I ended up a 6324. Com/Nav/Elec and weapon systems tech for the cobra and huey helo's.

I had to follow the family tradition and join the Marines. Besides the air force said i was too fat at 5' 11" and 185lbs. :hehe:

haha i am goin to school for electrical engineering when i get everything straightened out! i thought about the army but the air force has been a family tradition so i will keep it goin

haha that sounds like it would be cool. do yall know what the mos is called for heavy equipment? i wanna work on it and maybe drive it. the recruiter wouldnt talk to me becuz i am 6 foot tall and weigh 125 and i have to weigh 140 to even join!
 
I have been AF for a good number of years now and has taken me around the world a couple times. It is not a bad way to go. Welding would most likely be "Metals-Tech" not a bad job. Can be challenging...get to make parts from scratch sometimes. Good luck and have a weight gainer shake.

When I was in basic, the first sergeant asked if anyone in the company was a heavy equipment operator before joining. Several guys raised their hand, all excited, and ended up mowing the lawns with manual push mowers. Be careful what you ask for.

They also say that every military job they train you for has a civilian related occupation. I'm not too sure about that, since a buddy of mine is still looking for a job as a flame thrower.
I know another guy with the only tank repair shop on Fifth Ave. in Manhattan.
....then there's the door gunner in the Huey....

Yeah....I know how to run a backhoe too....it's called a shovel. Yup put your back in to it son and start filling those sand bags....
