Hi, i need some help with tuning, I'm a noobie with no hands on resources...... I've been doing alot of reading but would like to meet people to help with tuning, and get some races together.

Let me know

Thanks
Joe

I don't know if you are familiar with the Ronkonkoma train station. They set up a track there on sundays in the fairly freshly paved back parking lot using fire hoses. I have not run there yet but they should be about ready to start again soon, I'll be going up there once they do. It's probably about a 45 min drive from where you are, or you could just jump on the train.

Sounds good sounds good.....Do you know anyone that tunes car? How much do they charge?

I'm in the Central NJ area but I am in LI all the time. Racing @ Floyd Bennet Field in Brooklyn starts soon. I'd frown on anyone that charges you to tune your car. I'd help you for free. What kind of car and motor?

I agree with Ross, I would gladly help ya get it tuned too free of charge.

Hey Ross, where in Brooklyn is Floyd bennet field? How serious are they there? I may just have to come out and race a little on road with ya one weekend.

Thanks Guys, youve been really help full. I'm going to give it another try.

I have an hpi 18ss with a OS .18 CRV engine.

Soo i set the throttle position to 1/8 opened at idle.....should my brakes be on at this point? If the engine is racing upon start what should be done? Adjust the idle needle? or make it more rich?

Thanks
Joe

1/8 open is too much. At idle the carb should only be open 1-2mm at most. Look inside the throat of the carb when the throttle is closed or in the brake position and make sure the opening is no more than 2mm.

Okay now once its set to 2mm, should the brakes be completly on at this point? or should there be some back slack? at idle should the car be taking off without brakes?

Thanks Guys youve been big help with this..... Hopefully youll see me on the track this summer. ;):buggy1:

The car should pretty much roll freely, if the clutch is good it should sit still at idle, if it wants to take off at idle, either your idle is still set too high and engaging the clutch, or your clutch or clutch springs may be shot.

Floyd Bennet Field is an abandoned airstrip in South Brooklyn. Its actually fairly famous and you will get a lot of Google hits on it. From the Belt Parkway in Brooklyn take exit 11-S which brings you onto Flatbush Avenue South. About 1 mile south of the Belt Parkway, keep left and turn left at the traffic light just before the Marine Parkway Bridge toll plaza.

Its an 1/8th scale sized track and the crowd there is pretty competitive. They do run touring cars but most people run 1/8th scale. Most drivers there have a lot more on-road experience than I do. Hacks happen (not sure if they are on purpose) and cars do tend to take on damage if you are not very careful. Your car should be on foams.

OKay, should the brakes be engages at idle?

no the brakes should not be engaged at idle. you want the car to pretty much be able to sit still by itself at idle.

the guys at flloyd bennet filed are a pretty decent bunch they can be a little intimidating at first but are more then willing to help you out. there are a lot of 1/8 scale drivers and lately more 1/10 scale TC guys showing up.

They just recently sealed the track surface for better traction and better tire wear and should be laying down the paint for the permanent layout this weekend or next weather permiting.

They will be holding races there just about every sunday starting in the next few weeks. there website is http://www.phpbbserver.com/fanaticremotera/index.php?sid=7f5e41cdec3f830fc0ebe83f1900fc7b&mforum=fanaticremotera

iLcapo i'm out near freeport if you need more assistance with your engine I may be able to help you out just gotta see if the schudles mesh (sp)

:breakdown :bling:

Okay soo when i engage the brake the throttle should only be open .5mm?

I'm going to try this out as soon as i get off. With this help ill be able to tune it myself and learn. Now the idle adjust serves for what purpose?

Evilgrin. ...... Thanks....I'm going to try to tune it.......if it doesn't work we def got t meet up

the idle adjust is to set the minimum opening for the carb so that when you hit the brakes you do not close the carb completly thereby stopping the engine.

you want the servo at center with the trim at neutral (aka center) then with the idle stop set you attach the linkage and set it up from there.

the throttle trim is mainly for fine tuning say adding a little drag brake or raising the idle speed so the engine won't flame out or bog down after waiting on the start line for a few min.

I remember finding a tuning flow chart a while back if I can find it again i'll post it up.

here are a seris of links that should help you out now and in the future.
