Has anybody used these on there savage????

I might be wrong, but I think I've heard that they suck. Something to do with binding or something. I made a set of sway bars from off the shelf stuff for about $20 (I think). If anyone wants some pix and a how-to let me know.

BTW, sway bars make the Savage handle a whole lot better on all terrains except extreme rock hopping.

hey error how do you make them sway bars for a savage. i am getting my ss next month and want to tru\y and get the stuff i need before i take outa layaway from the hobby shop.

I used some music wire (sometimes called piano wire at the LHS), some brass tubing that the music wire fits in, a set of Kyosho sway bar ball ends (they slip over the music wire and provide the balls on the bar), a set of GS 5.8mm ball link ends, a length of full threaded 4-40 rod, some long screws, zip ties, and some fuel tubing.

You might be thinking WTF, but the only hard parts are bending the bars, modifying the side bulks and drilling the lower suspension arms. A picture would simplify things, but I can't lay my mouse on the ones I took at the moment.

Essentially, you bend the bar so that the brass tubing is as wide as the bulk heads (the ones on the sides of the diffs) and the arms of the bar are at an angle of about 60 degrees and fit above the upper suspension arm. you have to notch out the side bulks a bit so that the tubing rests on the spacer between the bulks, also this prevents the bar from doing anything other than providing a torsional function. the Kyosho ball ends should be adjusted so that they are just behind (for the front) the upper arm, (in front of on the rear setup). Now the tricky part, you have to drill some holes in the lower arms. The lower end of the sway bar links fit in the big triangular opening in the lower arms. Drill a pilot hole perpendicular to the arm side and aimed at the vertex of the oposite side of the triangular opening. Don't drill a big hole, just enough for the screw to go in without deforming the plastic of the arm. Once you have these drilled you're just about done. Make 4 links with the GS tie rod ends. One end will have the included balls, the other will use the Kyosho ends on the bar. Use the 4-40 rod for these. Once you have the proper length, remove one end and put some fuel tubing over the threaded rod and put the end back on. I think you might have the idea I'm getting at so, nuf said.

I was really impressed with the improvement in handling when I put these on. The tendancy to roll over was reduced and dirt oval racing was out of sight. hell, it even made it corner better on off road tracks. I'll try to code up a how-to tomorrow with pix, which should make more sense of all of the above. Like I said, I think the total cost of the project was about $20 and a little time. I should have accurate dimensions and part numbers for the how-to, so it shouldn't take as long as it took me to do.

One other thing to improve the Savage, replace the diff grease with diff oil. I use 10K in the rear and 5K in the front diff. And while ya have the diffs open, do the spider diff mod. The Savage 21 had 2 diff gears (not sure about the 25). I have an Picco 26 on mine and I'm sure that the stock diffs wouldn't last with that kind of torque. I used the Kyosho diff pins and gear set. The diffs are much smoother now and work better. I can find the part numbers for the spider mod if ya want too.

Whitt...

what the hey... I am going to order them... I always like testing things out and letting you guys know the results.....

cool, just wanted to give ya a heads up though. I can't remember the thread, but someone on here was saying that those sway bars interfered with the rims. Give it a try, but I'd do a search on sway bars and savage, maybe GPM. I hope they work, sway bars are the schiznit on a savage.

i am working on getting the stuff for the spider gear mod. but looks like it will be january before i get my savage ss. why don't they make all cars air cooled. save us from spending 150.00 on a radiator.
