Ok I'm about to place an order to RC Boyz for a few Robinson Racing steel gears for my t-maxx tranny, however there are still two more gears that I could not find made in steel.

The stock part numbers are:

4984
4985

Those two gears are still plastic, I'd like to replace those as well with steel, anyone know of any place to buy these gears in steel?

Also while I'm at it, I plan on replacing all the bearings in the tranny with a set of Team Blue Star sealed bearings, have any of you tried these or have heard any kind of feed back about these bearings?

Thanks,

-Michael

Well after more researching I was able to find the answer to my own questions...

OTB Technologies sells the 2-Speed Gears made of 7075 alum with a gaurantee of, if you wreck either gear, simply send it back to them and they will replace the gear for $19.99.

Thus far I've found two places that sell OTB gears:

Stormer Hobbies: $99.95
Renegade R/C: $79.95

Which now brings me to my next question. Will the steel RRP gears destory these two alum gears? Also will the alum gears hold up to a .21?

I haven't found anything about Team Blue Star bearings, but I was able to find a decent price for Boca bearings that I'll use instead.

Once I get the OTB gears and Boca bearings, I'll be looking for some type of replacement/upgrade for both the front and rear diffs...any suggestions?

I run the OTB input/ 2 speed combo with RRP primary gears(the 2 main gears when using a foc are rrp alum). I just had to replace the rrp gears after about 10gals under big block power and they already had 10-15 gals on them from a small block. The reason they failed was they were just plain wore out. I use sm diffs. They are the only set that uses oversized bearings. I looked into the maxximizer and kippster sets before buying the sm. The sm seemed the most bulletproof. I just think using 1/8scale diffs is a much better solution than a modded stock diff. SM was running a deal on kippster diffs and sm cases a week or two ago. They were alot cheaper than the 7.5diffs and cases. EDIT: If you try and run the rrp input against the otb 2 speed set it will ruin it. The RRP Foc and primary output wont hurt the otb because they dont come in contact with each other. Here is a link to where I asked the same question on rc revolution.

Woodie, the alum gears should take it. One of the gears in my t-maxx tranny is alum as well as the case is alum. If you're worried about blowing gears in your tranny then either let your slipper clutch to it's job or put a plastic spur gear on. Remember how cheap and easy to replace a spur gear is compared to replacing gears inside the tranny.

RRP makes a nice hardened steel set (thats what I just put in). While OTB is the ONLY company I know that makes the first and second gears themself.

I just decided to go with the hardenned steel and plastic first and second. Those 2 gears are not taking nearly as much torque as the input and output gears. Just opinion.

I WILL be using hardened steel gears from RRP, other then the first and second gear, right now they are plastic. If i use Alum 1st and 2nd gears with the rest of the tranny being steel - whats the odds of the hardened steel gears eating the alum gears?

My 'guess' would be that you run the same risk as steel with plastic. The steel is harder, therefore may wear on them easier. IMO, I dont think you would have a problem for a loooooooong time, but, the alum would prob. give before the steel.

Remember the part I said in my earlier post about the spur gear if you are really worried about blowing gears.

Running plastic is quite abit different then aluminum and steel. The plastics are most often self-lubing. The aluminum should hold up ok cause of the grease that is applied to them. If they were to run without any lube on them.(which you being an expert in the RC would never have that happen) Then in such a case the aluminum gear will get eaten.

Just my .02¢

For what you’re doing, do you think you need alloy first and second gears?

IMO, get the RRP gears and run them, if you blow anything, then look at up grading.

I went with the RRP alum not the steel in mine. I opened it up the other day after about 15 tanks, most of them in high stress track use and all still looks new.

If you feel you must, go all aluminum. Mixing metals is like mixing drinks. When all is said and done you will have fun but end up broke with a raging headache in the morning.

I’m using the BlueStar bearings. For now all seem to be holding up well.

What clutch system are you going to be using? I didnt need the input and 2 speed upgrades until I installed an 1/8 scale clutch. A stock style 2 shoe clutch cannot transfer power as effiecently as a 3 or 4 shoe buggy clutch. The 1/8 scale buggy clutch is designed for a .21 and doesn't burn up under the extra strain of the added hp and weight.
