Hi Guys,

Posted my q in intro section as couldn't wait (a little excitable when it comes to the car) but should have put it in here - this site is amazing, so much knowledge in one place = awesome!
Anyways new to nitro and was worried enough about break in - I like to at least try and sort these things out by myself as general rule but then I started break in and now am more than worried....
Basically after a bit of messing around (flooded it etc) got it started, it wouldn't idle for more than a half minute so I richened the low speed a little and now when I start it it screams up to very high rpm - no change when I turn the idle air screw, after some readin it sounds like I have an air leak and cupooterluvr (cheers again!) has given me a few places to check but wondering if there are any other idea's floating around in the masses....

idling should be circa 10-20 seconds. like its said many times in the forums, its not a race of who can idle longest. you should lean it back down, as the super-rich lsn is almost the equivalent of throttling it.
remember, a rc car is not something you start up, idle and adore, you race and bash the thing. dont forget such simple carbies only tune well for a narrow power band, and you tune it accordingly to what you need (and it shouldnt be in the idling power band). its all in the tuning, tinker with it and youll get it right eventually. for a guide, look at the yellow-backgrounded stickied posts at the top of the forum
hope it helps.

Oh the book and LHS said to idle a couple of tanks before letting it even move a little - so it is normal to have to blip thr. a few times a min to keep her running? I'm wishing it was back to that rather than screaming - I'm going to completely strip it tonight put all back to oem and pray it doesn't ramp back up to max RPM when I start it.

Blippin the throttle during break in is common. Running that rich tends to load it up, and it needs to be blipped to blow out some of the oil. (usually known as 'blowing the snot out of it)

Hahaha s'got a cold huh - so do you think if I lean the lsn back out (only gave it an 8th turn!) it will bring the revs back down? I figured i wanted it rich (wish I was rich) and the idle air screw would determine rpm while sitting there.... So much to learn so little patience - I want to take it for a run already!
Thanks heaps guys I'll let you know how it goes, with a little luck it'll be run in by the weekend and i can go give it some juice (and probably crash it lols).

Did you check the trim on the transmitter? That could be the source of your problems. A small idle gap isn't going to do cr@p if your trim is set full throttle.

Also, you should drive it around from the first tank to the last one in break in. Without a load on it the engine can over rev during break in and run badly later. Plus, the loaded conditions are what you're going to be running it under so that's what you need to break it in as. I'm pretty sure that just setting it on the ground will help with your revs.

I didn't see anything about how LARGE the idle gap is-- the idle gap should be no more than one mm.

Hi Guys,

Well I stripped everything off, set all back to oem spec started it up and all was good again - still had to blip the throttle but thats OK as I took Cupooterluvr's advice and started rolling it around..... Woah! even a little blip and the thing starts movin pretty quick - I almost took out my own ankle :)
Was constantly checking temp and didn't let it rev too much and I was still lovin it - can't wait to actually give it some gas, back to drawing board again though my brand new charger won't recognise it has the hump pack connected....
Anyways MASSIVE thanks to you guys I was freaking out but after reading these I got home calm and it was fine as you said it would be.

Cheers,
T.

Glad I could help. I hope it screams pretty good after you get it set up and tuned right. Good luck!
