Well - I had a touring car race this weekend on the Florida coast, and something terrible happened. This will serve as a lesson to me, and hopefully to all who read this. While pitting for my friend, he and another racer came into the pits to refuel during the B Main. The gentleman sitting next to me grabbed his fuel bottle just as I was bending over to check something on my friends car. When he grabbed the fuel bottle, he squeezed it too hard and shot several ounces of nitro fuel directly into my left eye. This proceeded to fuse my contact lense into my cornea. By the time we got to the hospital, it was too late, and the doctor had to scrape the pieces of lense out of my eye. My vision is almost completly gone. Down to seeing large trucks and elephants, but can't tell the difference between the two. I have another appointment on the 29th, to see if Lasik surgery may be able to restore some vision in my eye.

Moral of the story is although I bet no one here, including myself, wears goggles or at least sunglasses while in the pits, or turn marshelling - maybe it would be a good idea if we did. I know that i will be taking much more precautions after this incident.

I hope some of you who read this will learn from my mistakes.

HOLY poop NA!!!! Man that sucks! First the VW accident now this!!! OMG I hope they can help you man eye sight is so important.

yeah - there isnt anything i can do, so I'm not too stressed. I can still see fine out of my right eye, but its pretty weird drving, and typing on the computer. The doctor at the hospital seemed hopeful that lasik type surgery would be able to correct it. He didnt go over the details, but basically they would cut away the damaged part and replace it with a new, fake one - kind of like a permanent contact lense.

Damn, what a freak accident. I hate that for ya NA. Hopefully they will be able to restore some of your vision through surgery. Hang in there dude.

yeah - what a b day present, lol. Like i said, I'm managing just fine though, no 'sorrys' for me, lol.

DAMN NA, you have the worst luck! Sorry to hear that man, but don't think you are going to use that for an excuse why you got walked all over at the Winter bash, lol. J/K, I hope everything goes well with the surgery, and you get your vision back in that eye.

Ouch. I wear contacts as well but only wear my sunglasses on sunny days when I run my stuff. Guess I will have to put a pair of safety glasses in my tool box. Better safe than sorry.

Sorry to hear about your incident. Hope you are able to get the vision back.

That SUCKS! What I can't believe is that nobody there had any emergency eye wash. I ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS have the Bausch & Laumb Emergency EyeWash in my tool box when running nitro. I have used it on 2 occasions already. You know when the fuel spits up out of the gloplug area?!?!

I hope all works out for you man!

I honestly thought it was going to be another 'my exhaust kept falling off' story.

Haha Chris. I know - can't believe i didnt carry any wash with me - just didnt think ahead. And the track was in a rural setting, almost an hour to the hospital, and about 20 minutes from anything else. Oh well, live and learn. I can see it now - everyone asking me why i have safty goggles on in the pits........lol. Ill give everyone a heads up on what the doc says - i think i typed earlier that the appt was on the 29th - i was wrong, its on the 26th.

I dont wear goggles either - even after two shots in the eye. I guess sometimes we are just idiots. But I do carry that eyewash to offset my testosterone imbalance.

lol

lol

i guess that's better than taking a shot in the mouth, lol. Wait - you didnt get that 'shot in the eye' while alone with woodie during the buffalo bash did you?

Holy poop!! I hope everthing works out for you man. I have gotten fuel in my eye before and it is NOT fun! But I do not have contacts. If this helps,my wife just had the lasik done and it was a snap and she loves it. Hope it works out for you!! Pee Wee

well, i guess the good news is now my health insurance will have to pay for the lasik, since it isnt deemed cosmetic anymore, lol. Pee wee, it isnt really lasik surgery though - i will know the details after my next appt - but i guess this is more like cataract surgery. They use a laser to burn off the top of the eye, and then surgically implant a new one.

Sorry to hear about that NA, poop, that must have hurt. They gonna put ya under when they do the surgery thing? I'd freak if were me and they didn't. Best of luck bro.

error - i have no idea. i dont even know if they are gonna do that surgery. it is all hear-say until i see the doc on friday.

good luck at any rate. I'm sure that the doc will do something for ya.

Whitt...
