Can someone explain to me what the 2000 mAh stands for? Also I've noticed there are 3000 mAh batteries?

the mah rating basicly is how much energy the battery will store a 2000 mah will run your car for longer than a 1500 mah...but both have the same amount of power meaning a 2000mah will not make your car faster than a 1500mah

i perfer nimh....they say nicad builds a memory if not fully discharged

(edit) they now have 3600mah nimh

Any idea what an off the shelf 9.6v rechargeable battery (like those that come with rcs) would be in terms of mah?

first most hobby grade rc's use 7.2 volt 6 cell batterys depending on your esc (electric speed control) you may be able to use more cells for higher volts and more power but most use 7.2v 6cell

and the mah's range from like 1500 to 3600 ....the higher the mah the longer the run time

again what kind of turing car are you looking at??

We have a car that's just one of those off the shelf types. I'm just trying to figure out if I could get a higher mAh battery and it would last longer.

ohh I'm sorry your talking about a radio shack or wallmart type rc yeah that is 9.6v

id check out radio shack if they carry those batterys i dont know if they come in differnt mah's

As long as the Volts are the same the mAh doesn't matter, its just an indicator of how long the battery will last each discharge. But some bigger capacity batteries have different connectors, so beware to check that or have a soldering iron ready. And also nimh dont have memory like nicad, and nimh is lighter but usually a little bit less able to deliver amps thouh.

I ONLY use nimh for my planes, they are a preference choice for R/C cars I think.

The milli-ams are like the size of a fuel tank. The bigger the number, the more fuel for run time.
It the car calls for 7.2, and you put in a 9.6, you will get a LOT more speed, at the expense of shorter motor life. Depending on the type of speed controller it has, that might burn out very quickly with the extra voltage.
