I was woundering if anyone here likes the idea of a 4 wheel steering Maxx? Not just the one where you mount the servo on the back of the rear bulk head, but a whole new chassis set up, one that would let you run almost any engine you wanted.

it might be cool for a show truck but probly not a basher it would be just one more thing that could go wrong, break and drain the batts
 
I've had a design in the works for about 6 months now......the biggest problem is stability...the rear needs to be limited in the steering throw.....I did mine by using a V servo connectionand making the furthest point steer the front and the closest point steer the rear......I shelved this project to do a mutant maxx customization...mostly because I tried 4 times to hand mill/lathe steering knuckles for the Maxx that were 90 deg instead of straight.......all I wanted to do was get that HPI military body and make something close to a warthog from HALO......I have mock up steering knuckles made but they won't work under load.....so I am almost done tweaking the mutant maxx and will be getting back on the AWDS T-maxx soon....if you want I can give you more detail on how to mod the chassis, but you do need to make new braces that are shorter...as you will use 2 front ends to make this happen

the way I'm doing it should be pretty tough and take some abuse.....just need to use one of those JR 260 oz servos for the steering....
 
Dude if u could get a body that looked like the warthog I would but it from u straight up I think it would be awsome if someone made a body like that I would stick a small masterchief in the seat and a mini cannon on the back
 
LOL yeah my brother is really into it and finallygot me to play it......I just got HALO 1 2-3 months ago....I beat every board on Heroic but legendary is ridiculous......HPI I beleive has a body that looks similar but not exact...so I was going for that look....even if I just sit it like a shelf queen it would look cool, but that goes against my toy code...if you can't play w/ it get it out of the house.....

The reason I have posted this question is that I have made a "new" chassis for the Maxx to accomadate 4 wheel sterring and also made new chassis braces as well. It holds up quite well. I also use a Y-connector to control the rear tires that has a "steering trim" in line to adjust wheel alignment seperate fron the front wheels. Also with the extra servo A battery pack helps a lot. SO I wanted to see what people thought of the idea.

I just dont like the rear moving on its own... Its hard enough trying to drive in reverse with some speed and not flip.
 
the way I did mine is one servo controls both front and rear.....just limited throw on the rear....did you use a separate servo for the rear steering? and how well does your design handle the turning? does it flip easier.....I am really considering doing a new chassis similar to the truggy kits to lower my center of gravity in the turns w/ it....I just want to be able to run 2 posi diffs and set it up for oval races so it really needs to be lower anyway.....
 
My design handles the turns realy well. The reason is the chassis is 2 1/2 inches longer that stock in wich gives it a bit more stability. I do use two servos on my Maxx for steering, the rear servo has a limited range of motion. If you want I could make you a low cg chassis As I have been workin a design and almost done with it.

do you do CnC work by any chance?
I've been dabbling w/ 2d cuts at a friends shop.....I need to learn 3d modeling to do what I want to do though....appreciate the offer I might take you up on it.....I'd like to finish mine to where I can put power in it though.....maybe we can swap designs.....are you looking to produce yours? I was toying w/ the idea but it seems noone is really interested in it for the money you'd hve to charge....I figured I could get my modified parts packaged and up for sale for around $150 for the whole kit but you'd need to buy 2 pro-line steering kits from somewhere else.....
 
I have been working on trying to "market" my chassis.To make them at a resonable cost is the hard part. I do not have CnC, but it would be nice to have, I do have access to a lathe and mill. To get people interested one has to go find them and then they will show and tell others, then the ball gets rollin.

I have seen this set up before. It is the one that bolts to the rear bulk head, the one that I talked about in the begining. I do use the Y Harness that they talk about there tho, it does work realy good for keepin the tires on the same track. It is just not the set up I like, that is why I made my own setup. The problim I saw with the set up is that when you jump the truck and you land on the back side i see it takin out the rear stering and other parts, but that is my own opinion on it.
